Question:
Hi Hethir,
I am writing because I am having trouble conceiving. I am 43 years old and considered to be in good physical condition and young for 43. I have had pre-testing done through a fertility doctor and all my results come through with flying colors and my tubes are not blocked. The doctor indicated that my ovaries are not “acting my age.” My husband’s sperm count is good and his test results are normal. So why are we not able to get pregnant? I am struggling with this. I have been tracking my ovulation and still unable to get pregnant. What items should I start with to alter my diet to hopefully increase my chances of getting pregnant? I am still hopeful that I can get pregnant naturally. Thank you for your time.
Answer:
It is nice to hear from you. From the details you provided me below I would suggest to focus on eating a fertility specific diet and look into the following:
Step 1: Fertility Cleanse, Baby and Me Prenatal, MorDHA Omega 3 (month 1)
The Fertility Cleanse is a great way to begin a natural fertility program as it helps to cleanse the liver of excess hormones, toxins, etc so we can start with a clean slate. The prenatal and omega 3 contain important nutrients that are needed for healthy ovulation, egg health, and fertility. They are foundational.
Step 2: Improve Egg Health Kit, Baby and Me Prenatal, MorDHA (month 2+)
The Improve Egg Health Kit contains fertility superfoods and nutrients that help with hormonal balance, increase circulation, and boost the health of your body and eggs. (The Baby and Me Prenatal is included in this kit)
You can learn more about each of these options below.
Fertility Cleanse
Improve Egg Health
Baby and Me Prenatal
MorDHA/Omega 3 for fertility
All of these products can be found at our Natural Fertility Shop. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best wishes,
Hethir

Hi,
I am trying to get pregant but i have not been successful so far. I am having a recurring yellowish greenish vaginal discharge and my cervix blleds during intercourse. I have been giving antibiotics over & over again for this condition but alsa it keeps coming back. Can this be the reason for me not getting pregnant?
Hello Stacy,
In herbalism we would want to reduce the inflammation and infection of the cervix. A product that we carry called Women’s Best Friend has herbs that act as natural antibiotics (goldenseal) and reduce inflammation (uva ursi, protease) and pain (cramp bark, Jamaican dogwood). It may take some time to see the results but this product has worked wonders for many of my clients. You can learn more about it here:

Hi,
I’m 24 and my husband and i have been ttc for the past two years, i havn’t had any medical advice , just been keeping track of bbt using ovulation kits nothing seems to help also just this past month i started vitex , and royal jelly. do you have any adivce for me. I also have a thyroid problem could that cause infertility?
,
Hi Krystal,
I think going to licensed health care practitioner would be a good start. This will help you to learn what may be causing your fertility challenges. It will be much easier to know in which direction you should go and what natural therapies may be best for your unique situation if you know what is going on with your body. It is good that you are tracking your ovulation. The thyroid problem could affect your fertility. The thyroid is important in regulating the body’s energy, regulating hormones and aiding the body in the use of hormones and vitamins. If your hormones are out of balance you may not be able to conceive.

Hi Hethir,
I’m almost 44 years old (November), never been pregnant. I have hypothyroidism and taking pills L-Thiroxin 100mg, my FSH and LH are not normal. In 2007 I had Endometrial Hyperplasia and by hysteroscopy found signs of adenomas in endometrial cells. Doctor Suggested to try Zoladex>3.6mg injection for 6 months and it helped. After that everything was all right. My period returned after 2 months of stopping an injection and my doctor was surprised about my eggs health. My period was regular for 4> months-28 days. Now irregular:25,21,27,35,27,43,34 and this month came> even twice-7-th of August and 25-th of August.I have my follopyan tubes checked. One is blocked at the end.My doctor wants me to put is hormonal therapy, but i refusing and gave up everything, I mean hormonal therapy. Please give me your advice how to start.
Hi Mzia,
The best suggestion I have is to book a Natural Fertility Email Consultation as I would need to know more about your health history and diet. You can learn more about it here: http://natural-fertility-info.com/natural-fertility-email-consultations
can these products be used with bromocriptine a product used for high prolatin problem
Hi Bisi,
I am not sure what products you are talking about. We don’t recommend taking any herbs while on fertility medications. Bromocriptine is a medication.
For a natural alternative which may lower high prolactin levels you could learn about the herb Vitex. Prolactin is a hormone that stimulates milk production and breast growth during pregnancy. High levels in the absence of pregnancy are often the result of a very common women’s endocrine’s disorder called hyperprolactinemia. High prolactin levels are also linked to fertility problems. Vitex has been shown to decrease high prolactin levels.

I’m a little bit confused with the correct dosage for vitex tincture, one dosage states 10-15 drops 2-3x day and the other dosage says 30 drops 2-3 x daily. Which is the correct dosage. I just finished my 1st cycle on vitex (15 drops 3x daily), I was able to increase my LP from 8 days to 9 days and by looking at my temps I finally ovulated this cycle. Am I taking the correct dosage or should I increase it. Plus I’m 40 y/o and I’ve never been pregnant. I’ve been hearing a lot about DHEA to improve egg health/improve fertility but I can’t seem to find information about on your site. Do you not recommend it, not like it or are there other things that have proven to work better? I’m also taking B6, B50 complex, royal jelly, maca and prenatals. I’ve also been taking baby asa to help with pain (arthritis) since I can’t take my regular meds/pain pills.
thanks for everything,
maryann
Hi Maryann,
I am not sure where you saw the 30 drops, 2-3x’s a day dosage? Could you please let me know. Our recommended dosage is: Tincture: Take 10-15 drops of vitex extract, taken 2-3 times a day all month long except during menstruation.
We do not support the use of DHEA as taking pure DHEA is likely to convert into the wrong hormones and can also go into androgen and estrogen pathways, causing more hormonal imbalance. The goal should be to support the endocrine system by using adaptogen herbs and supportive nutrients to help the body to restore hormonal balance instead of using supplements as hormonal replacement therapy. If you do whish to use DHEA, we would suggest you work closely with your doctor a naturopath so your hormones can be monitored while you are taking DHEA.
Have you considered a Natural Fertility Consultation? This will better help us to guide you in the right direction for bringing about a balanced body and fertility.

Dalene,
I found the “take 30 drops 2-3x daily” on “Is it Maca or Vitex, or Maca and Vitex???”. I do want to get a Natural Fertility Consultation but with all that’s going on right now (too much to explain at the moment), it’ll have to wait until January. I was just curious what all the hype was about DHEA. I’ve just heard so much about it but I didn’t even want to think about using it until I had spokin with you or one of your colleagues. Your site is the only place that I get my information from, the only site that I trust. I recommend it to everyone! I know that what ever question that I have, I will always recieve a prompt and truthfull response. I thank you so much for that. To be honest, if it wasn’t for you guys I don’t think that I would have any hope in becomming a mommy. Sorry if I sound too mushy. LOL
Hi Maryann,
You can find the Fertilica Vitex tincture here. Because I don’t know what brand you are using you may want to follow the recommendations for that product. I will let Hethir know about the recommendations on the Maca and Vitex Q&A page and let her know they are not the same as what we generally recommend on the rest of the site. We still think that 15 drops 2-3 times a day is best in general.

So to make it clear- your body produces natural DHEA, all other DHEA is synthetic, not natural, even if some natural ingredients are used.

Hi Heathir,
I will be 45 yrs, on the 28th of January 2010, but still want to get pregnant, I did 4 trys of IUI and was unsuccessful, is there hope for me I was pregnant twice, when I was 40 and 41 and never got pregnant again.
Thank you,
Neomie
Hi Neomie,
It is difficult for me to say whether or not you will get pregnant or not, no one knows that for sure. Your chances of achieving pregnancy after the age of 45 decrease. Some things women your age choose to focus on to maintain healthy fertility- uterine tone, egg health, hormonal balance, cervical mucous, regulating ovulation (if your periods are irregular).
Herbs for uterine tone and strength-
Nettles
Red Clover
Red Raspberry
Oat Straw
Lemon Balm
Skullcap
Rose Hips
Conceptions Tea
I wish you the best!

Dalene,
This is a very informative site. Thank you for hosting it. I am 21 years. Had my period when I was 14. Once. Nothing after that. So my parents contacted the doctor. They put me on Yasmin – birth contro pills. If I stop taking it, I do not get periods at all for months. Also my facial hais start to grow. Doctors did prolactin, FSH, TSH etc levels – all normal. They also did MRI of my brain. Pituitary normal and no sign of emptry sella. So evrything is normal. I am thinking of starting Vitex. I have heard and read reports that women on Vitex get fatigued and also they have other issues due to medication. How long does one have to take Vitex and are there any other suppliment recommended? As you can see, I am frustrated with the whole case. Are there any withdrawl symtoms once it is discontinued? I have also read that women undergo depresion while on Vitex. Is that true? I just want to take precaution before starting it. Should I discontinue using Yasmin? What can I do to stop facial hair growth and acne? I would like to give it the best go for Vitex. Please advise.
Thank you.
Notat
Hi Notat,
We do not recommend taking Vitex while on birth control. Birth control may be making your body have a regular menstrual cycle, but you will never be able to conceive while on it. It may impact your fertility negatively in the long run, especially when taken over a long period of time. If you choose to stop taking birth control you may want to learn about Fertility Cleansing. There are specific herbs that help to support the liver to getting rid of excess hormones and toxins. There are also herbs and nutrients that support the uterus to cleanse of old contents and stagnant blood. The Fertility Cleanse Kit may help your body to do this.
I have never heard of women becoming depressed or fatigued while on Vitex. In one study, vitex outperformed vitamin B6 for relieving PMS symptoms like depression, headaches, water retention and constipation.
Traditional application for Vitex:
Capsules: 1,000mg a day is the suggested amount to use. For best results use vitex capsules all month long except during menstruation.
Tincture: Suggested usage is 10-15 drops of vitex extract, 2-3 times a day all month long except during menstruation.
However, unlike powerful hormone drugs, vitex works slowly to normalize the body. Maximum benefits are often achieved after 6-12 cycles with vitex. Vitex may be taken for up to 18 cycles.
Have you considered a Natural Fertility Consultation? This may help us to guide you in the right direction.
Please discuss with your doctor if you are thinking of going off of birth control.
Best Wishes,
Dalene
Dalene,
Thank you for your response. When I stop taking birth control pills, my facial hair starts to grow. Does Vitex prevent hair growth (as Vitex takes a long time to work). If not, is there any other remidies you suggest. How many cases have you come across like mine? Just for the curiosity, do you know the success rate? I looked at the satistics – 10 in 15 amenorrhea women get cured by Vitex, is this also true in your experience?
Sincerely and millions of thanks – Dalene,
Notat.
Hi Notat,
We have not had many women write in with this problem. You may want to learn about herbs that support hormonal balance such as Maca, which nourishes the endocrine system. The herbs Vitex and Saw Palmetto may also help. These herbs help to work toward hormonal balance. Your hair growth may be a symptom of hormonal imblance. They do take time to be effective. I am not sure about the statistic you speak of, but in one study, vitex helped normalize progesterone levels and increased the luteal phase from 5.4 days to 11.4 days. In addition, two double-blind studies show vitex extract increases a woman’s fertility and chances of successful conception. Vitex has been shown to normalize heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), relieve amenorrhea (absent menstrual cycle), and decrease polymenorrhea (too frequent periods).
Speaking to your doctor about working toward relieving your symptoms through actually balancing your hormones rather than just treating the symptom of facial hair growth may be something to think about.
Best Wishes,
Dalene
Dear Dalene,
Thanks once again. I have decided to give Vitex a go. You suggested Maca, Should I take it along with Vitex and woud the dose be teh same as suggested on the link you sent? I have also read about applying progesteron cream. Is it advisable to have both Vitex and progesteron cream at the same time? If yes then how long can I apply the cream. I have read that the cream is applied after 2 weeks of cycle and stopped when the mensus starts and the start applying 2 weeks after again. But in my case I may not get my mensus for few months (due or amenorrhea), what is your suggestion? I will keep you updated on routine basis so that other women like mine will get benefits.
Many many thanks.
Best regards,
Notat
Hi Notat,
Please follow the directions for use of each individual product you purchase on the box or lable that comes with the products (no matter where you purchase them from).
You can learn how to use Progesterone Cream properly at our Progesterone Fertility Guide Page. This guide includes how to use it for inducing ovulation.
It is safe to take Maca, Progesterone Cream and Vitex all at the same time. Be sure to follow the directions exactly.
All the best,
Dalene

Congratulations Marilyn! We are so excited for you!
If you were taking Maca for low progesterone you may want to talk to your doctor about continuing it into your 1st trimester. Please get your doctors approval to continue the Maca. Be sure you are taking a good prenatal vitamin. We like Baby and Me Multivitamin because it is 100% whole food. You should not have to continue taking extra folic acid if you’re prenatal vit. contains 800mg of folic acid. You may continue the vit. B if your doctor thinks you need it. Please let us know how you are doing as you progress.

Hi Dalene,
My ivf doctor got me started with Dhea for 3 months. I was curious with vitex so I was taking it for 2 weeks and my period started. (no period for 3 months before taking vitex). I’m still taking dhea and stop the vitex. I’m afraid that vitex would interfere with the dhea. Does it??? I just want to regulate my period before I start my ivf cycle.
Kinda regards,
Arlene
Hi Arlene,
We do not recommend using Vitex while using DHEA. Vitex does have the potential to throw off what your doctor is trying to accomplish with the DHEA. Please let your doctor know of any herbs you are wanting to use or are using while you are in their care.

The goal should be to support the endocrine system by using adaptogen herbs and supportive nutrients to help the body to restore hormonal balance instead of using supplements as hormonal replacement therapy. In your case you are using it in preparation for IVF, which is a medical procedure. We are not medical doctors we are herbalists so our views may differ a bit.
We wish you all the best for your IVF!

Hi Dalene,
Thank you so much for your responses. You been a great help.
