COFFEE

Postby chiron » Sat Jun 27, 2009

Hi what about coffee? I am an ex-addict (easily 10 large ones a day, now 1-2 normal cups a day) and was wondering would 1 cup a day do any harm? Otherwise we drink rooibos-tea (no sugar, just a drop of milk). I just miss that 1 cup in the mornings...

It matters if you are currently having troubles getting pregnant. Women who drink coffee have been shown to have increased estrogen levels compared to those who did not. Some women can drink coffee all day and get pregnant quickly. But for those who are having trouble it is these little lifestyle adjustments that can make all of the difference.

Caffeine has been shown to increase estrogen levels. A study from Fertility and Sterility shows that drinking just two cups of coffee a day boosts levels of estradiol, a natural estrogen. Women who drink 4-5 cups of coffee a day produce 70% more estrogen in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle (when the body is trying to produce a viable follicle for ovulation, which is already and issue in women with PCOS.)

If you need help getting off the bean, check out Teccino. It is a coffee alternative that tastes great and is alkalizing for the body.

Here is some additional information about caffeine and fertility that you may find helpful:

Thank you Hethir, so coffee goes out the window then. And everything else that contains caffeine ;)

Hi Hethir,

You mentioned that caffeine is the main issue in coffee... but other drinks also have caffeine content like green tea, black tea and other forms of tea, as well as chocolate drinks. Does it mean, we should also refrain from these drinks? Or their caffeine levels are not as high and as significant as in coffee, so we can have them as substitute?

Thanks for your help.

Thank you Hethir for suggesting the Teeccino herbal coffee. I googled it after I read about it under the PCOS diet info. I am a coffee addict and I can't tell you how many times I have tried to quit. I just love the taste of coffee and decaf, I have read, is no better! To make the coffee decaf they use the solvent methylene chloride which I think is a carcinogen (not sure about that but still...) I ordered the Maya Caffe Herbal Coffee made from herbs, grains, fruits and nuts made to taste just like coffee and its all Organic! I'm hoping that this time I'll be able to quit the processed coffees for good. Who would have ever thought that I would have found an alternative to my addiction to coffee on a fertility web-site. It's a testament to this sites all encompassing approach to health and wellness. Thanks so much.

Hey all,
Just wanted to update everyone on the Teeccino herbal coffee (no coffee in it however its made from herbs, grains, fruits and nuts and made to look, taste and smell just like coffee. It comes in many different flavors but I just got regular Maya Cafe dark roast and it tastes kinda nutty). I just received it about a week or so ago and can honestly say I loooove it! And this is coming from a die-hard coffee addict. If you are a coffee addict like I am who can't pass a coffee shop without stopping in you should give this herbal coffee a try. I had to wean myself of the old stuff b/c I was getting some pretty annoying headaches but after a few days I'm 100% herbal. And its organic ladies! (and gents) Thanks again Hethir and Dalene for including this great alternative on your site! mstross

i have never heard of the link between coffee and estrogen/estradiol, this is very interesting.

so here is my question. when i had my estradiol tested on day 3 before, it was pretty low (can't remember the number off the top of my head). i ovulate on my own every cycle, but i tend to have a slightly delayed ovulation. i thought it may be linked to the low estradiol, but who knows.

i am not a regular coffee drinker, i only drink it once in a great while. but for the past two months for some reason i have been more attracted to coffee and have been drinking it every other day. for someone with low estrogen, could coffee then have a positive effect and raise my estrogen levels to a more "fertile" level? i know that from a chinese medicine perspective, coffee is considered to have many health benefits / healing properties. like all things, it is good in moderation. i just never thought it had such a direct effect on our hormones!

any thoughts on coffee increasing estradiol being a good thing for some women?

Hhhmm..this is interesting, in theory I guess this would work. Honestly I have never heard of coffee in TCM being of great health benefit. I know drinking too much of it can have a negative impact on digestion, your nervous system and your sleep cycles.

Other herbs that may increase estrogen in the body are red clover, licorice rt. and royal jelly.
