I just read this interesting post and thought I would share it.

In a study of women who received the "birth control shot" -- also known as Depo-Provera -- nearly half lost at least 5 percent of their bone mineral density in the hip and lower spine within two years.

Women who were smokers, who had never given birth and who didn't consume much calcium were at highest risk.

The two-year study included nearly 100 patients who had the injection. Of those, 45 women lost at least 5 percent of bone mineral density in their lower backs and hips. Further research for another year in some of the study participants found that those at high risk lost even more bone mass.

Depo is the worst thing I have ever had! I had peeling skin everywhere, lost a lot of hair, broke out with acne, had no period and then immediately after the 3 months had a continuous period for 6 weeks! I had to take iron I was so depleted. It was hell on earth. Luckily only 3 months after being off of it I conceived my second son so it doesn't appear to have affected fertility as it has in so many women who have been on it for longer. A good friend of mine was on it for 10 years! She had so many health problems all the time from headaches to cysts to GI stuff and when she went off of it they resolved. I am such an advocate for taking this stuff off the market. It's just awful and there are plenty of alternatives out there. Thanks for posting this Dalene!
