Does Maca increases testosterone levels in women (PCOS)

Postby babylicious » Sun Oct 10, 2010

Greetings,

I have PCOS and high levels of testosterone, I have been in fertility treatment for the past 4 years, I was using Clomid and had a chemical pregnancy and then an ectopic in my right tube, the tube was saved, I did a HSG and my right tube where I had the ectopic was open but my left tube was slightly blocked, after my ectopic I've done 2 IUI but I could not get pregnant, I Can't Afford a IVF, at the moment I'm trying naturally, I have tried vitex 500mg per day for one year, then I leave it for 6 months and I've been taking Vitex 500mg daily now for 2 months and I've noticed that my cycles are shorter, my cycles were from 28 and now my cycles are 24 and 25 also have noticed that when I take vitex I gained weight faster, Do you have any idea that I might be going with the vitex? I wonder if Maca would help me more than the Vitex to regulate my hormones and also i would like to know if Maca increases testosterone levels in PCOS womens. Thanks.

Hello,

Just because a woman has PCOS does not mean Vitex is the best herb for her. If have regular menstrual cycles this may not be the best herb. Vitex is specific for irregular cycles, low progesterone and luteal phase defect. Maca may help support the entire endocrine system which in turn controls hormone output. PCOS is considered an estrogen dominant condition, excess estrogen levels also cause progesterone levels to become too low. Taking maca may help to increase the progesterone levels. It would be best on an individual basis to get your hormone levels tested before choosing to supplement to increase progesterone. You may also want to consider learning about natural progesterone cream supplementation. Often when women have high testosterone they have low levels of both estrogen and progesterone.

Thanks for your reply, I always had regular cycles, i had blood test done and show low progesterone, high testosterone and prolactin sightly high, recently my Luteal Phase is more short than usual, I think Vitex is not helping me and this shortening my cycles so I will stop drinking and I'm going to start taking Maca also in this cycle I started using progesterone cream after my ovulation I hope this helps keep my luteal phase . Thanks.

As I said I stopped taking vitex and started taking maca and use progesterone cream after ovulation also I started taking vitamin B6 after ovulation and this month my cycle was 28 days as it was before taking Vitex. I also do blood tests and my DHEA-S is 200 previously was at 500, normal glucose level and FSH in 4 also my Prolactin and LH are normal I think this regime will work for me. Thank you for your help.
