Treating cold/flu and candida while nursing

Reader asked:

Hi,
I’m so enjoying your video through YouTube! I found a link to you on MDC. You do a great job explaining everything. One question that I have about the products in the Cold and Flu video is if they are OK with Nursing?

Also, I would love to hear if you know of any products that are good for balance in your system when it comes to Candida. I’m a tandem nursing Mama and have had three little boys in less than 5 years, so I’ve slowly become very out of balance and now have a systemic yeast infection. I’m looking for ways to help with this.

Thanks again for the information! I so enjoy your videos.

Love to you,
J

Hethir’s Answer:
Hi and thank you for your email. The herbs I mentioned in the cold and flu video is not recommended to use while nursing. Some of the ingredients such as oregano, goldenseal, and thyme are not good for young children and would affect the flavor of your milk dramatically.

There are some great herbs you can take for cold and flu remedies while nursing:

Echinacea – (Super Echinacea from Herb Pharm is the absolute best)
Astragalus
Oregon grape root

You can make this remedy by purchasing these herbs in separate tinctures and mixing them together. Take 15 drops 3 times a day.

You may also buy these herbs in bulk and blend together in equal parts to make a tea.

This is a great way to treat your nurslings ;) You take the herbs and they get it through your milk.

Answer to your Candida question :

I did make a Candida video, but you will need to approach it differently as a nursing mother. It is not recommended to cleanse while nursing, so recovery may take longer. It is great that you are focusing on keeping your body in balance as your boys systems are greatly impacted by the health of yours.

Candida treatment for nursing mothers :

There are three steps:
1. Start taking a well rounded probiotic, I love Primal Defenseicon from Garden of Life.

Take this daily for 3 months and review if your Candida is in balance.

2. Use a suppository called Yeast Arrest.

3. Your diet has a huge impact on the Candida. Stay away from sugars and white bread products. At first it will need to be all forms of sugar, fruit and added sugars. If it is just a mild case, you can just cut out artificial sugars and added sugars.

I hope this helps.
