Can a Gluten-Free Diet Improve Fertility?

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

Can a Gluten-Free Diet Improve Fertility?Celiac disease is a digestive disorder that causes damage to the small intestine resulting in an interference of the body’s ability to properly absorb nutrients from food. Celiac disease affects about 1 out of 133 people, though many people that have the condition are not even aware of it. If proper attention is not paid to the disorder and a gluten-free diet is not followed, many health problems can occur including infertility.

The Gluten-Free Diet

People that suffer from celiac disease are unable to digest and process gluten, which is a protein that is found in many grains like barley, rye and wheat. There are many food products on the market that contain gluten, and when these products are consumed by an individual with celiac disease a variety of symptoms can occur.

Unfortunately, many of the symptoms that present themselves from celiac disease are symptoms that are common with other digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis and inflammatory bowel disease. As such, in many cases the celiac disease is not properly diagnosed so it is not properly treated.

People that suffer from celiac disease must follow a gluten-free diet. When they eat foods containing gluten, their body’s own immune system actually begins to destroy the small intestine which prevents proper absorption of nutrients from food that can lead to a variety of health concerns.

The Gluten-Free Diet and Fertility

The longer that celiac disease goes untreated, the higher the risks are of developing problems with fertility and conception. Clinical studies have shown that women with untreated celiac disease have a very high rate of infertility with difficulties in conceiving. Untreated celiac disease also seems to affect a man’s fertility as it creates a hormonal imbalance that causes reproductive disturbances.

The largest concern in women with untreated celiac disease is the high risk of miscarriage the condition seems to cause. In a case study performed on a group of women ages 22-38 years of age with untreated celiac disease, all suffered from recurrent miscarriages over a course of 11 years. All of the women were placed on a gluten-free diet and evaluated for the long-term to determine that affect of the gluten-free diet on their fertility. Out of the 13 women, 6 became pregnant within 1-4 years after starting the gluten-free diet with one having a successful multiple birth.

There is no evidence showing that a gluten-free diet will help the fertility of a woman that does not have celiac disease, though there is significant evidence that those women that do will benefit greatly from the change in diet. Not only can switching to the gluten-free diet help to improve the ability to conceive, but it also improves the woman’s ability to carry the pregnancy full-term.

If you have been diagnosed with celiac disease and have difficulties with fertility, it is essential to switch to the gluten-free diet to improve fertility. If you have been diagnosed with another digestive disorder and are having problems conceiving, it may be worthwhile to be tested for celiac disease if you have not already done so to make sure a proper diagnosis has been made that can help you make any necessary changes to your diet if you do in fact suffer from the disease.

The Power of Perseverance

By Hethir Rodriguez

So we just got back from a trip to the California desert. I had been looking forward to this trip for a couple of months and was so excited to be doing yoga for three days and relaxing with friends. Well, not everything turns out as you expect. Joshua TreeThat saying sure was true during this trip. We checked into an adorable little bed and breakfast getting ready for the festival to begin the next day. The next day comes and I am ready for my first yoga class. As I get over to the class I enter into a room that has over 100 people standing mat to mat ready for class to begin.

I found a spot just large enough for my pink yoga mat and began to work through letting go of my expectations. Something you don’t know about me is that doing yoga does not come naturally. I am a high energy, short attention span type of girl who runs miles everyday, does taekwando and talks very fast. So when I do yoga there is a constant soap opera going on in my head. For some reason yoga brings this out in me. I guess it is doing its work.

Triangle PoseClass begins so I focus on the positives like the live band playing, the opportunity to be here, the air conditioning and on and on. I am feeling good until we are asked to go into triangle pose. This is normally no problem, but when you are in a class that is so jam packed everyone’s mats are touching, this becomes an issue. So as I am in triangle pose with someones butt a little to close to my head for comfort. So I close my eyes, breathe and focus inward.

At this point you may be wondering why I put myself through this? At the time I was asking myself the same. But I pushed on through and made it to the end of the 2 hour class. What helped me to push on through was knowing that once it was over I would feel amazing and be a better person for it. This fact gets me through so many challenging moments of my life. Can you apply the power of perseverance to your fertility journey? Are there expectations you can let go of. Can you take a deep breath and take some time to look within? Can you push through the hard stuff so you will be a healthier person afterward. It IS totally worth it.

Don’t be afraid to give your best to what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves.

Q&A

Q: What if I can’t eat organic?

qaI live in a very small town and the nearest place to get organic food is like 4 hrs away - we rent so we cant grow a garden really so I am kinda frustrated about that i would love to eat organically especially if it will help my health and my chances of conceiving but driving 8 hrs (4 there and 4 back) to get those things is kinda a big drive and journey .
-Will the cleanse still work if I’m not eating organically?
-Will it affect my fertility if I do not eat organically?
-Are there any tips or alternatives that i can do because i cant eat organically?

A: Not eating organic will not ruin your Fertility Cleanse. Making wise choices when buying foods is important.

Try not to buy pre-made foods full of chemicals and preservatives. Do buy local whenever possible. Wash fruits and veggies with a vegetable wash, found in most grocery stores. Try to buy whole foods. Read labels, try to buy products with as many real ingredients as possible, ingredients you can pronounce and understand. Try to find meat and dairy products from a nearby farm, or look for natural options, ones that say they don’t use synthetic hormones or antibiotics.

Examples of poor food choices are pre-made canned foods such as spaghetti-o’s, frozen pizza, frozen meals, Hamburger Helper

Learn good eating choices at our Natural Fertility Diet page. These food choices are choices for life, not just while cleansing.

Maca Powder - Our Organic Maca Powder (7oz) is 25% off. This special runs from September 21, 2009 through October 5th 2009.

Maca PowderMaca is a nourishing food for the endocrine system, aiding both the pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid glands (all involved in hormonal balance.) Maca has the ability to affect key hormones in both women and men without containing hormones itself.

Maca helps to stimulate and nourish the pituitary gland, acting as a tonic for the hormone system. When the pituitary gland functions optimally, the entire endocrine system becomes balanced, because the pituitary gland controls the hormone output of the other three glands.

In women Maca works by controlling estrogen in the body. Estrogen levels that are high or low at the wrong time can keep a woman from becoming pregnant or keep her from carrying to term. Excess estrogen levels also cause progesterone levels to become too low. Taking Maca may help to increase the progesterone levels, which are essential to carrying a healthy pregnancy. Estrogen in men produces erectile dysfunction, low/lack libido, low sperm count, and lowered production of seminal fluid. Men who use Maca have been shown to have an increase in libido and healthy sperm.

Our organic maca powder is “Gelatinized” which means the fiber has been taken away from the rest of the plant and all you are getting is the medicinal herbal magic. This stuff is super potent and powerful. Just one Teaspoon is equivalent to 16,200mg of regular Maca. So the flavor is going to be a little bit stronger and the powder is more brown than the prior one, but you are getting so much more Maca for your money than before. I absolutely love this new Maca. It has a malty, chocolate taste to it and goes great in fertility smoothies.

Summer
Summer in Mexico

I hope your summer has been a wonderful time of play and happiness. As fall comes around the corner it is a great time to get re-focused on your fertility goals and begin taking the steps towards a healthy, balanced body. I have included some great tools below to help you on your journey. Stay tuned for some very exciting announcements to come next week.

Fertility Recipe: Hemp Milk

We have been getting a lot of questions about hemp milk on the Natural Fertility Forums so we made this video and recipe to show you how easy hemp milk is to make.

Hemp milk is one of the healthiest nut milks which can be used in smoothies, cereal, or to replace milk in recipes. Hemp milk is also a great cow’s milk alternative for women with PCOS as it is high in protein and less congesting than dairy products.

Recipe
1/2C Hemp Seeds
1 Quart purified water
1-2T Agave nectar
1t vanilla extract

Liquefy in blender for 1 minute. Strain through nut milk bag. Keeps for up to 4 days in fridge.

You can watch my husband teach you how to make Hemp Milk in this Video :)

Article: Reduce Stress and Enhance your Fertility with EFT…

EFT or the Emotional Freedom Technique is a technique that can be used to better your chances of conceiving. Trying to conceive can be tiring both physically and mentally. It affects your spirit, mind and body. So I would like to introduce you to a helpful and easy technique based on ancient Chinese medicine. In theory, it is very similar to acupuncture. In this technique, the various energy points in the body are unlocked by gentle tapping. Either a practitioner can perform the tapping or the patient can be taught to perform the tapping alone.

How Does EFT Work?
The theory behind this technique is that when a person’s emotions are tightly wound up, it affects there physiological condition. Therefore by relieving the stress and freeing up the emotions of a person, a change is brought about in the physiological condition of a person hopefully helping her to conceive. The release of various tightly bound emotions has known to cause some patients to cry. It is also supposed to generate feelings of great relief and lightness.

This technique is great for those who have unexplained infertility or are experiencing a lot of stress on their fertility journey. It is one of the many infertility tools that are available to people who are having troubles conceiving. This technique is wonderful because it addresses both fertility and stress reduction at the same time. While the practitioners cannot guarantee conception, they can guarantee that this will not lead to depression or any other emotional downfall for the client. It is a relatively cheap or free technique that can be applied by a practitioner or on oneself.

Eat Your Greens Daily for Fertility and Health

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

A Salad a Day!If you are familiar with the Natural Fertility Diet you will know that we emphasize the importance of greens in the diet, making sure to eat one salad a day as well as one dark leafy green vegetable such as kale, spinach, or chard. Leafy greens and vegetables supply the body with important minerals and nutrients. The body needs to have a healthy acid/alkaline balance to function its best. Most diets today are very acidic (full of meat, sugar and white, processed foods) and need to have more fruits and vegetables incorporated into them.

Having a healthy alkaline environment is important for allowing the sperm to survive and make it to the egg. A mineral in the vaginal fluids activates the whipping of the sperms tail so it can begin to travel and make its long journey. If this mineral is not present the snapping action may be weak or not activated. Creating a healthy body begins with eating mineral rich foods, green vegetables being at the top of the list.

While this is ideal I wanted to make sure that you are getting your greens no matter what comes up in your day so we created a concentrate of sprouts, green vegetables, seaweeds and nourishing herbs to help fill in the gaps. UltraGreens was created to help make getting greens into your diet as easy as possible. This green superfood blend contains a ton of green grasses, seaweeds, sprouts, and medicinal herbs.

Two Teaspoons per day supply the body with an abundance of minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. Tastes great in fertility smoothies or apple juice.

Consumption of wheat grass helps to balance PH levels in the body to make a more suitable environment for ova and sperm. It increases oxygen levels in the body to improve cell and organ structure and acts as an overall fertility enhancer.

I get asked a lot by readers “Where do I start? What should I do first?” So I though you may be thinking the same and am going to answer this very important question today.

When it comes to boosting your fertility naturally one of the most important things to do is build a healthy foundation which the rest of your program can work upon. A health foundation consists of Nutrition, Movement, and Balance.

Nutrition Movement and Balance

Nutrition

Nutrition is a very important component to a natural fertility program. Nutrition plays a role in hormonal balance, creating and building healthy cells and eggs, supplying the body with important nutrients to combat free radicals and DNA mutation, reducing the effects of stress on the body, creating healthy blood, and so much more. Nutrition is basically supplying your body with the building blocks for healthy fertility and a healthy baby. What you eat will be building your baby period.

So to begin to build a healthy nutritional foundation you may need to make some changes to your diet. Some of these changes are going to be big, and others simple. I have created a free guide to the Natural Fertility Diet which you can read and get all the details on creating a wonderful, fertility and pre-conception food plan. But here are the 5 first steps you can take today:

1. Eat one big salad a day. Make a large, colorful salad every day. Have fun with it, add nuts, cranberries, goat cheese, walnuts, kale, whatever you are craving at the moment. Just make sure it has greens in it.

smoothie2. Drink one fertility smoothie a day with fertility superfoods in it. To make it simple you may want to start with the 10 Day Fertility Smoothie Challenge.

3. Eat organic. This one step will help to cut out excess hormones from your diet. Chemicals and added hormones found in meats and dairy are a major cause of hormonal imbalance. Produce should be organic as well because pesticides/herbicides/etc. mimic estrogen in the body.

4. Take a whole food multivitamin. This helps to make sure you are getting all of the necessary nutrients that are necessary for healthy fertility (folic, iron, vitamin C…). Think of it as insurance for your diet. A study from Harvard Medical school involving 18,000 women has shown that taking multivitamins, particularly folic acid, can improve chances of pregnancy…

5. Get Essential Fatty Acids in your diet daily.
Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) are important in overall health. EFA’s are necessary for proper endocrine function, heart function, brain function, they also reduce inflammation and so much more. Make sure to get these in your diet every day.

Movement

I call this part of the foundation movement because it is about moving your body and getting fresh oxygenated blood to your uterus, eggs, heart, liver, etc. The important movements for a great fertility program are:

1. Exercise daily
- Exercise is so fantastic for your general health. It helps to reduce stress, clear out toxins, promote a healthy weight, burn fat, and increases circulation to the entire body. Exercise also helps to re-oxygenate the blood, allowing the body to get more oxygen and heal faster, function better.

2. Massage - Massage is another aspect of movement that is important for detoxification and increasing circulation to the uterus, ovaries, and eggs. Self Fertility Massage is an easy way to do this one.

Unexplained Infertility3. Stretching or Yoga- Yoga is so beneficial as it helps to relax the body, stretch muscles and limbs which helps to bring fresh blood to all the extremities as well as reduce stress and balance the hormones through relaxation. An easy to follow fertility yoga program can be found here…

4. Increase your circulation - There are different ways to increase circulation to the uterus. Some quick and effective ones are to take hot baths, do castor oil packs on the lower abdomen, and move around through yoga or exercise. Circulation can be compromised to the uterus as it shares the same flow as your legs. When we are stressed or sitting a lot the circulation to the uterus can become compromised. Focusing on various ways of bringing fresh, oxygenated blood to your uterus is key.

Balance

Balance is an important part of building a healthy fertility foundation in more ways then one. For conception to occur there has to be the correct balance between hormones at specific times. So a healthy endocrine system is important to hormonal balance.

There also needs to be a balance in life. A balance between stress and peace, sleep and wake, and even your “time for yourself” and your “time you give to others” should be balanced. Here are 5 easy steps to bring more balance into your life both hormonally and mentally…

1. Take 5 minutes a day to be in silence. Clearing the mind and relaxing is a powerful way to help reduce stress and bring balance to a busy day.

2. Support and cleanse the liver for hormonal balance. This is one of the important phases of the Fertility Cleanse. The liver is responsible for clearing out excess hormones and toxins. By supporting the liver with nourishing herbs it is able to do its job better. The reduction of excess hormones floating around helps the hormonal system to stay/become more balanced. Everybody’s liver can use some support. :)

3. Nourish your endocrine system. The Natural Fertility Diet as well as fertility superfoods (such as Maca) can help to nourish and support the endocrine system. This system is effected not only by the stress in our daily lives but also the toxins in the environment. Using herbs and foods to nourish and support this system will help so it can function its best and keep the hormonal orchestra balanced and flowing smoothly.

4. Do something fun each week. Make sure to have fun and enjoy your life! Go to dance classes, make art, go on a date with your hubby… What ever it is have fun and don’t be so serious all the time.

5. Give. Give something of yourself to others. Whether it be a smile, a complement, a donation, or your time. Give of yourself and you will be happy. This can bring balance to your life that you have never expected.

Acupuncture and Treating Infertility

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

Should you try Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture to help you get pregnant? Yes. Here’s why. Acupuncture helps the body to become balanced and healthy. There are many studies that show great success when using acupuncture in combination with medical fertility treatments and on it’s own. I have included an article written by an acupuncturist to explain it in more depth, but before that I have some advice for you.

When deciding to try acupuncture you should be ready to commit to a health plan. You can not just receive one treatment and bam! that’s it. It will take a series of sessions to have an affect. Think at least three months, at first the sessions being closer together than moving farther apart once you are balanced. I personally see an acupuncturist monthly as part of my total health system, you should check it out. [click to continue…]

Fertility Smoothie Challenge Day #9

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

One of the main components of a healthy fertility diet is to include as many fresh fruits and vegetables that you can on a daily basis. As I mentioned at the beginning of this challenge:

“When it comes to boosting fertility and making the lifestyle changes that make a BIG difference it is the steps you take on a daily basis, every day, that make the biggest impact. This is how everyday decisions can add up to something amazing.”

So today’s smoothie is a way to get superb nutrition, in a fast, delicious and super easy way. This recipe is actually more of a fertility soup than it is a smoothie. And I apologize ahead of time for making a smoothie that includes ingredients that were not listed at the beginning of the challenge, but hey what fun would smoothies be if we followed all of the “rules” ;) .

This soup was first created by a woman named Ann Wigmore who helped thousands of people with there health through this soup and other healing foods. I have this for lunch a couple of times a week and have made it different every time. Also remember you can try different ingredients in your soups.

Serves 1

sprouts

Energy Soup

2 handfuls of greens (spinach, arugula, romaine, etc)
1 handful of sprouts (mung, lentil, green pea etc.)
1/2 an avocado
1/2-1 apple (depending on how sweet you like it)
2T dulse
2T Hemp seeds or pine nuts
Water

-Add all ingredients to the blender and blend. Add water as needed. The finished consistency when it is ready is a smooth soup. Pour into a bowl and eat with a spoon. Add salt and pepper as needed.

What makes this a “Fertility Soup”?
While there are no specific fertility superfoods in this soup, the nutrients and nutrition you are getting from the soup helps the body to operate at optimal health. All kinds of health issues have been reversed by people eating energy soup frequently. In addition the iodine from the dulse nourishes the thyroid which is an important gland involved in hormone balance.

Quesiton of the day: Did you try the Energy Soup? Did you like it?

Fertility Smoothie Challenge Day #8

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

Glad to hear everyone’s feedback about the Fertility Smoothie Challenge. I commend your ability to try new things and embrace health so enthusiastically! Today’s smoothie is a super yummie, decadent and delicious. Sometimes I have this one for dessert if I am craving something nutty and chocolaty.

Serves 1

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

Chocolate1/2T sesame seeds (soaked in water overnight)
1T Almond Butter or peanut butter
2 Bananas
1T Cocoa
1T Maca
1t Spirulina
Water

- Add all ingredients to blender, start with some water and add as needed to get desired consistency. Almond butter or peanut butter work great in this smoothie.

What makes this a “Fertility Smoothie”?
The Maca and Spirulina are fertility superfoods helping to nourish the endocrine system and provide important minerals to the diet easily. Both are best taken daily for best results.

Question of the day: What fruit would you like to see in tomorrows smoothie?

Fertility Smoothie Challenge Day #7

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

Hello everyone. I hope you have been loving your smoothies and sticking with the challenge. Consistency is the path to success ;) . While this recipe is not exactly a smoothie, it serves the same purpose and adds some variety to what you can do with a blender and whole foods.

Banana PuddingServes 1

Banana Pudding

2 Bananas
1/2 Avocado
2 Dates (pitted)
1t Spirulina
1/2T Maca
optional: 1/2-1T chocolate powder

-Add all ingredients in the blender. Use a little bit of water just to get things moving. The consistency when it is ready is a smooth pudding. You can do a lot with puddings. You can add oatmeal, almond butter, any type of fruit you want. Have fun and experiment. Also make plenty to share :) .

What makes this a “Fertility Pudding”
This pudding is an easy way to get nourishing foods and fertility superfoods (maca and spirulina) into your day. Spirulina is a wonderful way to get greens into your diet. It is mild tasting, packed with protein, minerals, vitamins, and chlorophyll. This pudding can be eaten any time of day and keeps in the fridge for a couple of days, but is best fresh. Maca powder is very versatile and can be added to many foods including oatmeal, baking recipes, and humus.

Question of the day: Have you stuck to the challenge this far? If so how do you feel? If not how do you feel?

Fertility Smoothie Challenge Day #6

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

During this smoothie challenge I have so far shared with you a wide range of smoothie ideas. Today’s recipe is a fun tropical smoothie that is perfect for the summer heat. Most of this fruit (except for the banana) can be found in the frozen section of your health food or grocery store if you are not able to get them fresh.

pineappleServes 1

Island Girl Colada

1/8c Pineapple
1/4c Mango
1/4c Strawberries
1 Banana
1T Maca
1t Royal jelly
Water

-Blend all ingredients together. Add water as needed for desired consistency. If you are using all fresh fruit you may want to add some ice cubes to get the slushiness of a colada.

What makes this a “Fertility Smoothie”?
One of the main fertility superfoods in this smoothie is Royal Jelly. Royal Jelly is rich in amino acids, lipids, sugars, vitamins, and most importantly, proteins. It contains high levels of vitamins D and E, and also has ample levels of iron and calcium. As all of these are essential to proper health and organ function, it is very easy to see how Royal Jelly can help with in assisting with fertility.

Regular consumption of high-quality Royal Jelly has been shown to help balance hormones. This makes it beneficial to those individuals that suffer from a hormonal imbalance, as it helps to provide support to the endocrine system. It can also help with problems that are related to hormonal imbalance, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or irregular menstrual cycles.

The Maca in this smoothie also helps to balance hormones and support the endocrine system. Click here to learn more about Maca for fertility.

Question of the day: What is your favorite smoothie you have ever made?

Fertility Smoothie Challenge Day #5

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

One of the best things about smoothies is that you can really blend almost anything into a smoothie. It is the simplest, fastest, and easiest way to eat healthy. It also requires little cleanup. Yay for smoothies!

Today’s delicious smoothie is inspired by the Andes mountains and is going to be a new and adventurous meal for you. It can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I only have piece of advice, don’t judge a smoothie by its color :) .

Quinoa PlantServes 1

Andes Dream

1/4c Quinoa (cooked and refrigerated)
1 handful Spinach (raw)
1 Banana
1/4c Blueberries (frozen)
2T Hemp seeds
1-2 Dates
1T Maca

-Put all ingredients into a blender add water, blend. Add more water until desired consistency manifests. Make sure quinoa is not hot. Refrigerated quinoa is best for smoothies.

The Andes Mountains stretch over 5500 miles from the southern tip of Argentina and Chile to the northern part of Columbia in South America. Both Maca and Quinoa are from this beautiful mountain range. Quinoa is a super seed which is prepared like a grain. It is an amino acid-rich (protein) seed that has a fluffy, creamy, slightly crunchy texture and a somewhat nutty flavor when cooked. Quinoa is available in white or red (I love the red because of how pretty it looks when cooked) at your local health food stores. It can also be purchased online.

Qunioa is rich in protein, maganese, magnesium (listen up migraine suffers), and iron. It also contains all 9 essential amino acids.

How to cook quinoa
To cook the quinoa, combine 1 part grain to 2 parts water in a pot. Bring to a boil, reduce, cover and let simmer for 15 minutes. I like to make a batch, have it with dinner and make enough so I have leftovers for my breakfast smoothie.

What makes this a “Fertility Smoothie”?
In this smoothie we are incorporating some of the healthiest foods you can eat in an easy liquid form. Eating a diet rich in whole foods is very important for fertility. Your body uses what you eat to build itself. So you want to make sure you are eating the best food you can. Hemp seeds are also one of my favorite health foods as they are jam packed with nutrients, proteins, and essential fatty acids. They mix easily and quickly, and don’t have a strong flavor. And of course we have Maca powder in the smoothie as this is a fertility staple and a super healthy addition to anyone’s life.

Question of the day: How are your energy levels since you have been in the Fertility Smoothie Challenge?

Fertility Smoothie Challenge day #4

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

If you were to ask me what my favorite food was (and it happened to be summer) I would say without a doubt, MANGOES! Being from an island and growing up with tropical fruits, this one has stuck with me as my favorite food. When in season I eat a couple a day. Another great thing about mangoes is that they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Here is my fertility version of the wonderful mango lassi from India.

Sliced MangoServes 1

Mango Lassi

1 Mango (fresh or frozen)
1/4c Yogurt
1T Maca
1t Vanilla
1/2t Cardamon
1 handful Spinach
1 Banana
1T sesame seeds
water

-Place all ingredients in to a blender and blend. Add water as needed for correct consistency. If you like it sweeter add a date.

What makes this a “Fertility Smoothie”?
The Maca powder is a great fertility superfood we are including in all of our smoothies (taking it over a period of time is best). The sesame seeds are a healthy source of calcium, as well as protein. The spinach is packed with minerals and nutrients. This smoothie provided vitamins, minerals, protein, enzymes, and so much more. And even though it is light green, it tastes fantastic.

Question of the day: What was your favorite fruit growing up?

Fertility Smoothie Challege Day #3

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

So yesterday I got you to try spinach in your smoothie, which was actually really good right ;). Today we are going to make something decadent and nutrient dense.

Serves 1

Chocolate Oatmeal Bliss

Oats1 Banana
1/8c Oatmeal (dry)
2T Dark chocolate powder
2T Hemp seeds
1T Maca
1t Spirulina
1 Date (pitted)
Water
Ice Cubes

-Put all ingredients in blender and add a small amount of water and begin blending. Add more water and ice cubes (I usually use 4) until consistency is how you like your smoothies. Let this one blend for a little while so it is smooth. Today’s fun ingredients are oatmeal and hemp seeds.

Oatmeal
Oatmeal is a great addition to a smoothie as it adds important whole carbohydrates and fiber. This helps the smoothie to stick to you for a while, plus it makes an easy meal, or snack. Rolled oats work great for smoothies.

Hemp Seeds
Hemp seeds are currently one of my favorite foods. They are rich in essential fatty acids, protein, and fiber. I add hemp seeds to my smoothies almost every day because of how nutritious they are as well as how creamy they make the smoothie. You can find hemp seeds at your local health food store or online.

What makes this a “Fertility Smoothie”?

The Maca powder, which is a staple in our fertility smoothies, nourishes the endocrine system (which helps to balance hormones) as well as supplying fantastic energy through the nourishment of the adrenal glands. Spirulina is a nutrient dense green food which helps to supply minerals, protein, and nutrients which may be missing if you do not eat a lot of greens. I like spirulina in smoothies because of its light taste. You can find both of these fertility superfoods at NaturalFertilityShop.com.

Yesterday I received a wonderful testimonial from a customer who had incorporated Maca and Spirulina into her diet. I thought you would enjoy reading it:

Hi Hethir,

I actually did the Fertility cleanse a few months ago and started taking Maca and Spirulina at the same time. This was in anticipation of undergoing the next step in my fertility treatments, IVF.

I am happy to announce that I am currently in my 7th week of pregnancy! This conception occurred with no medical assistance! My husband and I are excited and nervous as we have endured 2 miscarriages which were both in the early stages of pregnancy in the past.

We are taking it day by day and hope to be into our 2nd trimester by the end of August and welcome a new baby into our family by March of 2010.

Thank you for all your helpful information. I’m certain it played a part in our miracle.

Vicky S.

Fertility Smoothie Challenge Day #2

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

Today’s Fertility Smoothie is a really pretty and a healthy one. Berries are some of the most antioxidant rich foods we can eat and they are available fresh or frozen almost all year round.
Blueberries

Serves 1

Antioxidant Blast

1/4C Blueberries
1/4C Strawberries
1 Banana
1 handful Spinach
1 T Maca
1 Alpha Lipoic Acid (open capsule and empty contents into smoothie)
1 Date (pitted)
1 serving Protein powder
Water

-Add all ingredients to a blender and blend. I add a little water to begin with and add more as needed. As I am sure you have noticed that there is spinach in this smoothie. Don’t fear, just try it. When I first started adding spinach to my smoothies I was scared that it was going to taste weird and bitter, but is doesn’t. For some reason the spinach just disappears into the smoothie and you can’t taste it at all.

What makes this a “Fertility Smoothie”?
This smoothie is an antioxidant powerhouse. Blueberries, strawberries, spinach, and bananas are all high in antioxidants. One of the main roles of antioxidants is in protecting cells from free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cell structures and lead to numerous illnesses. When an antioxidant encounters a free radical, it engulfs it, and creates a weaker free radical that can not do further harm. A sister antioxidant then reactivates the spent antioxidant so it is available to go on protecting. This amazing cycle is continuously happening in your body without you thinking about it. So feeding your body a wide variety of the antioxidants it needs to do this miraculous job makes it all the better.

Now you may be asking, what does this have to do with fertility? The answer is everything. All of the organs, fluids, and players in the reproductive system are made up of cells which need protecting. Health cells = healthy fertility.

The good news is cells are turning over all of the time. The antioxidant rich foods that you eat and antioxidant supplements that you consume can all have an impact on the health of your cells. One area that we want to nourish and protect is the egg. During the cycle of an egg from “storage” to ovulation there is an opportunity for the egg to be impacted by toxins or nutrients. Antioxidants can provide protection from these free radicals so the DNA is intact and you have a health egg for conception.

The Alpha Lipoic Acid in this recipe is one of my favorite antioxidants. Alpha Lipoic Acid helps to reactivate all of the other antioxidants and also rejuvenates itself. It also turns bad genes “off” and boosts glutathione which is critical for liver detoxification (and helping your liver to get rid of toxins and excess hormones). To use Lipoic Acid in smoothies just open a capsule and dump the powder into the smoothie (throw the empty capsule away). It doesn’t have much of a taste to it.

Maca is also in this smoothie and will be a part of every smoothie in this challenge as the best results are seen when it is taken over a period of time.

Question of the day: What did you think of the spinach in your smoothie?

Fertility Smoothie Challenge Day #1

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

I wanted to start off this challenge with a very yummy and nourishing smoothie. Peaches are in season right now so I know many of you will have access to them. Fresh is best, but frozen will work as well.Peaches and Cream

Serves 1

Peaches and Cream

2 Peaches (take fruit off of pit)
1 Banana
1T Maca
1/4C Yogurt (organic)
1t. Vanilla
water

-Add all ingredients to the blender. I add a little bit of water to start with to get the consistency that I like. I also like to have some bananas in the freezer so it chills the smoothie and ads a great creaminess. If you find that you are hungry an hour after drinking your smoothie, add additional bananas, nuts or protein powder, they will pack additional calories to keep you energized through your morning.

What makes this a “Fertility Smoothie”?
When I create a Fertility Smoothie there are various levels to the formula. One of the main reasons to eat smoothies is to get a lot of whole foods into your diet in a convenient way. The fruit or whole food ingredients are added for nutrition, minerals, and antioxidants. Then there is usually a protein friend added. The protein in this smoothie is yogurt. Then I like to add a potent fertility superfood to the mix. In this smoothie it is Maca. Maca is one of my favorite fertility superfoods because of how it helps to balance the endocrine system which results in hormonal balance naturally (in both women and men). Maca also has a nice malty flavor, excellent for smoothies. We started with kind of an easy smoothie today, as I want to build you up for some of our super smoothies to come.

Question of the day: What is your favorite fruit?
