Stopping Birth Control to Start Trying to Get Pregnant – My Top Tips

Hethir Rodriguez - Certified Herbalist and Nutritionist

Reviewed by Christine Traxler, MD

So, maybe you’ve decided that now’s the time.

You’re ready to start a family and you’re getting off birth control. You might be thinking:

What do I do now?

At this point, there are some important things to consider.

Stopping birth control looks different for everyone. Your period might not come back for a few months. Or you could have strange, unpredictable cycles.

Some people can get off birth control and are pregnant within the next month, but that isn’t always the case because for some, that hormonal jumpstart doesn’t happen.

Here are my top tips for those of you who are stopping birth control and want to get your body back to a healthy hormonal balance.

Will You Get Pregnant When You Stop The Pill?

It May Take Some Time For Things To Get Back To Normal…

While you’re on birth control, your body’s hormones are being suppressed from an outside source (AKA your birth control.)

So, once you stop taking it, it could take some time for your body to produce adequate amounts of hormones on its own again.

You could be waiting for a while to get that first period afterwards. You may also experience spotting, or your period could be unusually light or heavy.

All these things can happen as your body is trying to rebalance itself again.

For that reason, be patient with your first, second, and even third cycle after stopping birth control.

This is the time where your body is working hard to rebalance its hormones. Patience is key here.

Start With A Fertility Cleanse

A fertility cleanse is a great place to start after quitting birth control. It can help you:

  • Support your hormonal balance
  • Increase circulation to your reproductive system
  • Amplify your body’s natural ability to balance hormones

These are just a couple of the reasons that a fertility cleanse is a good first step when you’re getting off hormonal birth control.

Transition Healthier Eating for Fertility and Hormonal Health.

Supporting your body through nutrition is one of the best things you can do to support hormonal health and prepare for a healthy pregnancy.

Specifically, following the natural fertility diet can help with any deficiencies you might have, as the pill prevents absorption of many nutrients that are important for ovulation and early pregnancy. I cover all the details on these nutrients in the video.

Taking a multivitamin, getting on track with a healthy diet, and drinking more water are just a few of the ways you can make sure your body is getting proper nutrition.

Herbs Can Help to Support the Endocrine System

If after one or two periods your cycle is still off, there are herbs you can use to help balance and support your endocrine system.

Some of my favorite tonic herbs for this are:

  • Ashwagandha
  • Shatavari
  • Maca

Learn About Your Body and Cycle Through Fertility Charting

Fertility charting is a remarkable way for you keep track of all the details of your cycle.

And best of all, it allows you to know when and if you’re ovulating.

Because you’ll be taking your temperature while you do this charting, you’ll also know:

  • The length of your period
  • What happens during your period
  • When progesterone is kicking in (Your temperature goes up)
  • When you’re ovulating (Your temperature goes down)
  • The length of different phases of your period

This really allows you to learn your body and be more effective when trying for a pregnancy.

Looking for More Resources?

Keep in mind that it’s totally normal to have a wacky period after you get off of birth control – so don’t stress over it too much.

But if you’re still having trouble after trying these tips, you can reach out to us for a consultation and get some personalized help.

Two things are clear about phthalates and your fertility health: One, they are everywhere, and two, they are controversial! Particularly controversial is the link between phthalates and fibroids.

Phthalates are a group of chemicals that are found in many everyday modern products. They’re found in floor and wall coverings, certain detergents, plastic food packaging, pharmaceuticals, lubricating oils, and personal care products like shampoos, soaps, hairspray, perfumes, and fragrant health products. Phthalates are even found in many of the plastic water bottles you might be drinking out of every day.

If you are as concerned about these chemicals in our everyday lives as I am, see our Ditch & Switch Guide so you can start getting those chemicals out of your home. You can find it by clicking on our Bio.

To make an impact on your health, you will need to first learn the actions and steps to take... then you will need to be consistent with those actions. It is the consistency that brings you the results. You are going to be human and not be perfect 100% of the time. Just accept that and get back to it. Consistency, day in and out, is more important than being perfect. You can't be 100% perfect for long, but you can be consistent every day.
