How To Get Your Period Back

by Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT

Find out what you can do to get your period back...It can be quite frustrating if you are trying to get pregnant and yet have no period. Having a healthy cycle is step one for boosting your fertility naturally and being able to get pregnant. There are a couple of reasons your cycle may be irregular such as stress, dietary deficiencies, low body weight, getting off of birth control pills, hormonal imbalance, or other underlying issues.

Since the lining of the uterus is not being shed, it is very important to clear out the old blood and establish a healthy cycle again. This can be done naturally and effectively with herbs and nutrition. I have talked with many clients who have been offered synthetic estrogen to get there periods going again… taking synthetic estrogen for this issue is like using a sledge hammer on a thumb tack.

Here are the steps you can take to get your period back:

1. Eat a healthy fertility diet. Diet is so important for a healthy menstrual cycle and reproductive system. What you eat impacts everything.

2. Take a whole food multivitamin.
Iron deficiency is one of the major factors for women not having a menstrual cycle and lack of ovulation. Other nutritional deficiencies can cause the menstruation to cease.

3. Use herbs to help clear the stagnant blood and increase circulation to the uterus while balancing the hormones.

The best Herbs for amenorrhea (lack of menstruation)

Dong Quai
This is the main herb for this issue. Dong Quai works by promoting blood flow to the pelvis where it will stimulate an absant or scanty period. It also nourishes the blood (it is in nearly all chinese herbal blood-building formulas). Treats iron deficiency and anemia. One of the best uses is it helps women who are not menstruating to invite there menstruation back. The increased circulation also helps to stregthen and balance the uterus.

Vitex
Vitex is another great herb for amenorrhea due to hormonal imbalance. It helps to balance the hormones while not containing any hormones within the herb.

If you have not had a menstrual cycle for two or months you may want to do a Fertility Cleanse. The Fertility Cleanse helps to cleanse the uterus of old blood and tissues while helping the liver to get rid of excess hormones.

Be patient, the body needs time to establish a cycle and hormone balance. Be gentle with yourself and your body will come back into balance.

I started taking Vitex (3 capsules a day) and am quite normal now and I am in my forties. I am quite please with it. It takes about three months to kick in. When you get your period….stop taking it and start again after the period is over.

Hi Hethir,
I came across your website and thank you for all the useful info you’ve provided on here. Your website is very easy to follow… very thankful ; ) I will def’ly be trying the fertility smoothie recipe. I am 29 years old and I’ve been trying to conceive for a year now. I got off the pill exactly a year ago and my period has been absent since. I was on the pill for 10 years without any breaks. Until recently, after 8 mons. of having no period, I looked into acupuncture treatment. After having a few treatments, my period was able to come back. Something to celebrate for sure !!! I’ve had my period for 4 mons now, but I’ve still not been able to conceive yet. The periods are still very sporadic, ie. I’ve had 30 and 35 day cycles and a missed period while traveling. The first couple periods were very light and dark colored (lasting 7 days). The most recent period seemed to have been more normal and heavier (also 7 days).

I take it as a really good sign that acupuncture has improved the blood circulation in my reproductive system and my periods are becoming more and more normal, but I still don’t know if I’m ovulating ? I’ve recently started using ovulation kits and the basal temp tracking method.

I am currently seeing a gyno/obs specialist right now and I still have to go in for an HSG Test. My dr. wanted to give me prometrium to kick start my periods, but I chose to go with natural healing instead. Are there any herbs/vitamins that would perhaps help me ovulate and create better menstrual flow ? ie) Vitex, Maca, Dong Quai ? Iron supplements ?

Along with the acup treatments, I’ve been asked to take some herbal capsules that are supposed to help me with kidney and spleen deficiency and to promote regulated menstruation. So far, I haven’t been able to look up any of the ingredients on the internet and I’m not sure if should be taking them. Some of the ingredients listed are : Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum, Herba Epimedii, Radix Astragali, Poria, Rhiszoma Dioscoreae, Rhizoma Curculiginis, Radix Dipsaci, Herba Taxilli, Semen Cuscutae, Fructus Lycii, Fructus Rubi, Caulis Spatholobi) Any help ? Are these something I should be taking right now ? How will these help me ?

I am really looking forward to your response. I’m so happy to have encountered your resourceful website. Your advice will be a great start to my new year. Please help me conceive ; ) Thanks Hethir !

Hi Joanne,

There is an herbal blend called Pregnancy Prep that helps to regulate the menstrual cycle, balance the hormones, and increase circulation to the reproductive organs. You can learn more about it and its ingredients here:http://www.naturalfertilityshop.com/Pregnancy-Prep-p/vpp60c.htm

As for the Chinese herbal blend. I am not familiar with all of those herbs as I work mostly with western herbs. You should ask your acupuncturist for more details about that product.

As for if you should take it or which blend should you use. It is best to work with one practitioner at a time so the programs do not conflict. You may want to continue with your acupuncturist once you get some clarification since you have had great results so far. If then you want to try something else out we are always here for you.

Best wishes,
Hethir

Hi Nicole,

There are many reasons that can cause a period is absent. One of the simplest and most overlook is diet. Eating a complete whole food diet and taking a whole food multivitamin can make all the difference. There are many vitamins and minerals, such as Iron, which are vital for menstruation.

There are also herbs which help to balance hormones and increase circulation which I mentioned above.

Hi Hethir,
I’m am also glad to have found your site. My Husband and I have been trying to conceive for 4 1/2 yrs. About 1 yr ago, I was diagnosed with POF and was told there is no hope of ever conceiving. Soon after, I started to see an Acupuncturist who deals with TCM and so it has now been just over a year. I have not had a period since October, and was recently put on Maca. I’m also taking a good multi Vitm., “Growing Jade”, EFA’s. Is there anything else you can suggest? Will my cycle ever come back?? I forgot to mention that I am just turning 36 and feel almost desperate.

Thankyou, Lisa

Hi,
I think it would be best to work or continue working with a practitioner close to you, so your treatment can be adjusted as needed. In addidion to that you may want to look into Dong Quai. In rat studies it has been show to help build the uterus lining. Also learn more about fertility preperation by using The Fertility Cleanse http://natural-fertility-info.com/prepare-for-conception, and the Fertility Diet http://natural-fertility-info.com/the-nutrient-dense-fertility-diet. I’ve been on the birth control patch ortho evra for 4 yrs straight with no break until recently I stopped taking the patch about 6 mths ago. Me and my husband have decided that we wanted to concieve a baby. So I bought some prental vitamins from the store like my obgyn suggest. And in the beginning after stopping the birth control my periods came. But not my period stopped and i have not had a period for a month now since dec 7,2008 and I wanted to know how can I get my period back. I mean my doctor said that its probably just my hormones from stopping the birthcontrol and I did take a pregnancy test which it was negative. So she told me to wait for it to come back ,but how long will that be. Cause I really don’t like this emotional run I’m on with my body. Can you please help me give me Hethir. Your website is very helpful.

11 Dalene February 12, 2009

Hi b,

Not all prenatal vitamins are created equal, you may want to look into our Baby and Me wholefood prenatal multi-vitamin. So what do you look for when you are buying a vitamin? One of the first things I look for is that it is Food Based or has some food based ingredients. You also want to avoid unnecessary fillers, colors and preservatives. Next, you may want to try a Fertility Cleanse to help rid your body, uterus, liver and fat cells of excess hormones and stagnant old blood that has accumulated in your body since being on birth control. You could also use herbs to help clear the stagnant blood and increase circulation to the uterus while balancing the hormones. The best herbs for absent period are Dong Quai and Vitex.. 12 Annie March 15, 2009

Hi Hethir,
I’m am so glad to have found you on YouTube. My Husband and I have been trying to conceive for the last 5yrs. About 1 yr ago I have been trying to watch what I eat and taking vitamins. By the way I’m 33yrs young & I have an irregular period and so I know that is a sign of infertility. I am interested in the fertility cleanse and wanted to ask you what other suggestions you might have. I really don’t want to deal with with taking drugs in order to conceive, I want to put in my body the best natural solutions out there. Please help :} Keep up the great work with all your hepful information on such a delicate issue.

13 Dalene March 17, 2009

Hi Annie,

Irregular periods are not a sign of infertility, but may be a sign of hormonal imbalance in the body. The best herb for regulating menstruation is Vitex. Vitex is an incredible hormone balancer, which adapts to women’s different needs. Vitex has been shown to normalize heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), relieve amenorrhea (absent menstrual cycle), and decrease polymenorrhea (too frequent periods). Vitex even eases inflammation of the uterus or ovaries, so it’s good choice for women prone to painful fibroids or cysts, too.You may want to look into trying Pregnancy Prep Herbal Blend. Pregnancy Prep includes the herb Vitex.

Pregnancy Prep is a great blend for women who want to boost there general fertility and enhance there chances of conception. The herbs in this blend help to:
-Improve ovulation*
-Support fertilization and implantation of the egg
-Tonify the uterus -Promote circulation to the reproductive system
-Encourage uterine health
-Normalize progesterone levels
These herbs have been used for centuries and studied by science with great results.

The Fertility Cleanse is a great start for laying the foundation of hormonal balance and getting rid of toxins, excess estrogen, old stagnant blood and tissues that may have accumulated in your liver, fat cells and reproductive organs over the years.

Thanks for your support!

14 Lisa March 23, 2009

Hi Hethir,

I’ve seen 2 fertility specialist and both have told me because of my FSH level reaching an “88″, I will not be able to conceive and need to look at an egg donor. My last FSH on day 2 of my period was 8 which gave me some hope. I’m 45 just got married and never had a child. I was pregnant at 25. My entire family has had children in their late 30’s. I am very healthy and was raised on organic foods. Should I succomb to the “egg donor plan”? This has truly been heart breaking. I think I waited too long. I’d like to do everything in my power to conceive naturally (and healthy, of course). Thank you for your help.

Lisa

15 Dalene March 23, 2009

Hi Lisa,

I cannot say whether you will be able to conceive naturally or not. I cannot give advice as to whether or not you should use an egg donor or not either. I realize how hard this is for you, be gentle with yourself! Search your heart for the answer, try not to get stuck on the why. The answer will come, stressing out is not going to help!

Vitex increases luteinizing hormone production while mildly inhibiting the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This indirectly boosts progesterone production and chances of achieving and maintaining a successful pregnancy. Vitex is also amazing at regulating the menstrual cycle. Vitex is an incredible hormone balancer, which adapts to women’s different needs. Vitex has been shown to normalize heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), relieve amenorrhea (absent menstrual cycle), and decrease polymenorrhea (too frequent periods). Vitex even eases inflammation of the uterus or ovaries, so it’s good choice for women prone to painful fibroids or cysts, too.

16 fregata March 24, 2009

Hi Hethir,
I was wondering if you could help me… My periods were always irregular and at the age of 25 I started spotting in between periods so my doctor first put me on a medication to stop the bleeding and then she send me to the gyno who suggested that I go on birth control to regulate my periods. I did go on birth control for about a year and my periods started to be normal however I got off the birth control because I started to get sick and did not not know what was wrong with me. Right now I’m 30 and I still have irregular periods recently I have noticed that I have been spotting a bit before my periods comes.. My period is irregular it last 6 days as always however if I start spotting a bit it would last a bit longer. My husband and I are trying for a baby for about 4 months now but now luck.. I do want to consive but don’t know what to do..
I do have a medical condition called IBS however that shouldn’t stop me from getting pregnant I think has to do with my irregular periods.. What should I do?
I have read about your fertility cleansing kit is there any side effects while taking herbs ie. loose bowel ect.
fregata

17 Dalene March 27, 2009

Hi Fregata,

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not caused from irregular periods. To get a handle on your IBS I suggest you work with your doctor on your diet. What you eat greatly effects your health and your fertility.

A Fertility Cleanse is a great way to start off your journey to healthy, balanced fertility. Because you have irregular periods, your uterus may not be ridding itself of old blood. A fertility cleanse can aid your uterus in flushing out old stagnant blood. It will also aid your liver in bringing about hormonal balance, by flushing out excess estrogen. Attaining hormonal balance will help you to get your menstrual cycle back on track. Every woman is different, you may get loose bowel from cleansing or you may not. Be sure to drink plenty of water, 8 glasses a day.

The two best herbs for regulating the menstrual cycle are Vitex and Dong Quai. These herbs need to be taken consistently for 3-6 months and beyond for desired results.

Because you have spotting when you should not you may also want to supplement with iron. Floradix is a wonderful whole food liquid iron supplement. You can find it at health food stores.

Dalene

18 Dalene March 31, 2009

Hi fregata,

IBS is not caused by irregular menstruation. Please talk to your doctor about options for your IBS. You could also consult a holistic practitioner or Naturopathic Doctor for your IBS. Eating a Nutrient Dense Diet may also help.

The best herb for irregular period is Vitex. Vitex is an incredible hormone balancer, which adapts to women’s different needs. Vitex has been shown to normalize heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), relieve amenorrhea (absent menstrual cycle), and decrease polymenorrhea (too frequent periods).

The Fertility Cleanse is always a great place to begin when starting out with herbs and trying to get your cycle back on track. Because you have irregular periods you may have old blood that your uterus is not able to get rid of completely and your hormones may be out of balance, the Fertility Cleanse Kit will help you to begin the process of bringing your fertility back into balance. Every persons body reacts to cleansing differently, so I cannot say if it will cause you to have loose bowel or not. Be sure to drink plenty of water and follow the recommended dosage on each of the products in the cleanse to make sure you don’t create a situation in which your body is detoxing to rapidly.

Be sure to let your doctor know you would like to do an herbal cleanse and let them know what supplements you are taking.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

19 Chelle April 1, 2009

Hi Dalene,

I was wondering if you could give me advise on Dong Quai and Vitex-

For the past two weeks I have been taking Dong Quai (Whole Foods Brand) – 400mg once per day. I have also been drinking the Dong Quai Tonic (Yogi Brand) – two cups at night.

I have been noticing that my circulation has improved, I feel warmer generally, and I also noticed more swelling around my breasts – however my periods have still not returned. How long does it take to see actual results? I have lost my period for approximately 1 year now and I really want it to return as my husband and I are planning to start trying to conceive this June.

Do you think that Vitex is more effective for lack of periods or should I stick with Dong Quai? Do you suggest one brand of Dong Quai/Vitex over the other?
Also, how long does it typically take to see results?

20 Dalene April 2, 2009

Hi Chelle,

It may take 3-6 months and beyond to achieve results. That means being consistent! Also, do not take the herbs once you get your period back while you are bleeding, but continue them until your cycle is regular. You may spot through your cycle at first, this is normal, your hormones are trying to regulate.

Without knowing your fertility history it is hard to say which herb would be “better” for you. You can combine both herbs, just follow the recommended dosage on each product.

If you would like to see the Vitex and Dong Quai we carry just click on the blue highlighted words.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

21 Chelle April 6, 2009

Thanks Dalene for your reply.

Is it safe to take both herbs? I’m currently still taking dong quai but am thinking about adding Vitex (400 mg). Should I take them separately – like one in the morning and one in the afternoon?

22 Dalene April 6, 2009

Hi Chelle,

You can combine these herbs safely, you don’t have to take them separately, but if you would like to that would be ok.

All the Best,

Dalene

23 Lisa April 9, 2009

Dalene,

I wrote you on 3-23 regarding fertility. Bless you for your good, sound encouragement…search your heart. I had 4 periods last year. It’s hard to conceive when your period is missing. I ordered Vitex, started taking it twice daily and have had 2 normal cycles. I hope this continues but I’m amazed at how quickly Vitex worked. I didn’t have 2 consecutives periods in all of 2008. Thank you, wish me luck and keep up the good work and GREAT information. All readers….it works!

Lisa

24 Lisa April 9, 2009

Dalene,

My question is how long do I continue to take Vitex? The direction say up to 2 weeks. Do I stop after my period starts up again?
Lisa

25 Dalene April 9, 2009

Hi Lisa,

Vitex should be taken throughout the month, stop when you are menstruating and begin again once you are done. Vitex should be taken for 6-12 months consistently to achieve desired results.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

26 Chelle April 10, 2009

I was wondering Dalene what you think about Fertilaid – and if you have heard any good things about it? I know that it does contain vitex, but I’m not sure in what amounts? Would you say this is more beneficial than taking dong quai & vitex together?

Also, are some brands of vitex more superior to others?

27 hethir April 10, 2009

Hi Chelle,

My thoughts on Fertilaid are that the amounts of herbs in the product may not be enough for the best benefits. While it does contain vitex, it also has 20+ some other ingredients in 3 pills. The other thing to keep in mind, while Fertilaid is a general fertility blend, most fertility issues are not one size fits all. Different herbs are needed for different imbalances. I personally like to use an herbal blend more specific for the fertility issue. Such as the two you mentioned, Dong Quai & Vitex, they make a great blend together, or adding tribulus to that for women with PCOS (all of these are available in Pregnancy Prep herbal blend)

All the best,
Hethir

28 Chelle April 11, 2009

Thanks Dalene – I will continue to take Dong Quai and Vitex. I have only started taking Vitex two days ago so I hope I will see results soon!

29 Chelle April 11, 2009

Another question, Dalene, I was wondering which herbs/foods you would recommend to increase estrogen levels? I’m underweight and and I believe that is the reason why I’m not ovulating. I’m actively trying to put on weight but I would like to expedite the process by adding some herbs/foods that may in fact increase estrogen. Also, is vitex helpful for people who are underweight?

30 Dalene April 13, 2009

Hi Chelle,

You’re Welcome!

Dalene

31 Dalene April 13, 2009

Hi Chelle,

Licorice (not the candy) has been known to increase estrogen levels in women.

Are you eating a Nutrient Dense Fertility Diet and taking a prenatal vitamin? If not these may increase your health. This diet represents a way of eating that supports and creates a very fertile body. We are what we eat and if we are eating foods that support ovulation, foster balanced hormone production, and increase the health of our eggs (to name just a few benefits), we are going to see the effects on our fertility. If you eat dairy products make sure they are whole fat, this may help with your weight. Make sure you are getting enough protein. You may want to consider working with a nutritionist to help you to learn how to increase your weight in a healthy way and to help you find out why you are underweight.

Vitex has been used for centuries to aid in fertility and has many studies proving its actions. This herb has an amazing intelligence by balancing which hormones need to be balanced without affecting the other hormones. I have never heard of it helping with women who are underweight.

Wishing you the best,

Dalene

32 Angie April 13, 2009

Hi Hethir,
I was wondering if you could help me… but first thank you so much for this wonderful site . My husband and i are so ready to become parents can you help. i was told i have PCOS. I have not had a period in over a year. We have had one unsucessful IUI and have not been able to get pregnant since. I was wondering what i should start first. Should i do the pregnacy prep first since that has Dong Quai and Vitex and i think will help me start my period again or should i do the PCOS fertility kit. Will the Maca help as well. Should i take evening primrose as well. Dont know which one to do or if i should do any of this at all. Please help…..

33 Dalene April 14, 2009

Hi Angie,

Beginning with the PCOS diet would be the first best thing you could do. Next preparing your body with a Fertility Cleanse. The PCOS Fertility Kit would come next. You could take the Pregnancy Prep while doing the PCOS kit. Pregnancy Prep needs to be taken over time 3-6 months and beyond to acheive desired results.

You could take evening primrose if you think you need it. Take it for the 2nd half of your cycle, not during menstruation though. If you take everything that I had listed above, I don’t think you will need the Maca. Maca is a nourishing food, that helps to balance hormones and boost overall fertility.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

It has been almost 6 months since my last period. As a result, I’ve been taking Dong Quai for the past week after doing some reading on this website. About once or twice a month I feel symptoms I normally feel when I’m on my period or about to get it like bloating, tenderness, and mild cramps but my period never comes. Since I started taking Dong Quai I’ve also been eating healthier and taking a multivitamin but I would like to help my period along sooner. Is it safe to take both Vitex and Dong Quai at the same time or should I only take one and not the other? Or do I need to alternate days between the two? If I am able to take both what is the recommended dosage? How long should I expect to wait until it works?

Hi Dalene,

I am looking to take the the Dong Quai, Vitex & Pregnancy Prep, to get my periods regular again, to increase my chances of conceiving. I havnt had a period for 7 months and in the last year and a half I have only had 2 periods. Should I start the tablets first to get my period back or should I do the fertility cleanse first and then take the tablets?

Thanks in advance!

I’ve had quite a number of missed periods in the past but never consistently. I had my last period in February of this year, I was diagnosed with extremely high Prolactin (and i didn’t want to take the meds prescribed)………….I get ur newsletter and read about Vitex and Dong quai. I started taking Dong quai immediately and noticed visible changes in my body, I started taking the vitex about a month ago and i got my period back. Vitex really really works, I’m so excited.
Thanks for the helpful information.

When doing the Fertility Cleanse, it is best to not take additional herbs during that time. You could resume them once you have completed the cleanse.

I am 41 yrs old, my right ovary and tube were removed due to a mass, the left tube is blocked, I have had 3 treatments of IVF resulting in 2 miscarriages of twins @ 8 weeks and triplets @ 21 weeks, unfortunately I am still childless. My fsh level was very high and also my periods stopped 6 mths ago, I am now suffering hot flushes and fear the menopause has started. I am so desperate to have a child of my own and hope that you can advise.

Hi Hethir,
I was on birth control for about 5 years and when I stopped taking them, my period completely stopped for a long time. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for quite a while now. Recently my period has been coming back slowly and I’m hoping you can give me some pointers on how to regulate my period and also to see if you can recommend anything to help me jump start my ovulation?

42 Dalene June 29, 2009

Hi Ammeh,

Vitex and Dong Quai used regularly for 6-12 cycles will help to regulate ovulation and your entire menstrual cycle. Bringing back an Absent Period or Irregular Period can be done naturally and effectively with herbs and nutrition.

Because you were on birth control for so long you may want to consider a Fertility Cleanse. When you are preparing for conception it is a great idea to rid your body, especially your liver of toxins and excess hormones and the uterus of old accumulated blood. When you are on birth control for a long period of time you are taking synthetic hormones, your liver acts as a filter for these hormones, a Fertility Cleanse may help to cleanse the liver of these accumulated hormones. This may also be a great way to help your cycle get back on track.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

Hi Sam,

It is best to start w/the Fertility Cleanse and then move on to the herbal program.

45 ameeh July 1, 2009

i noticed you mentioned dong quai. I was taking it for a while and noticed nothing. I’m not sure if all dong quai meds are the same but I purchased mine from online. Do you suggest a higher mg? The one I bought has about 565mg.

46 Sam July 2, 2009

Thanks for getting back to me Hethir…do you post to Australia?

47 Dalene July 2, 2009

Hi ameeh,

Dong Quai is best used for 6-12 cycles. Fertilica Dong Quai contains 1,040mg. per 2 capsules which you would take 3 times a day. So yes, our dosage recommendation is much higher.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

Hi Sam,

Yes we ship to Australia.

49 ameeh July 11, 2009

Do you have anything that can treat oligomenorrhea?

50 Dalene July 14, 2009

Hi ameeh,

For all of our readers out there here is the definintion of Oligomenorrhea from Wikipedia: Oligomenorrhea is the medical term for infrequent uterine bleeding episodes with intervals of more than 35 days. The duration of such events may vary.

Vitex and Dong Quai are the two best herbs for irregular menstruation.

Dong Quai is great for delayed or absent menstruation and light or slow starting menstruation.

Vitex is an incredible hormone balancer, which adapts to women’s different needs. Vitex has been shown to normalize heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), relieve amenorrhea (absent menstrual cycle), and decrease polymenorrhea (too frequent periods). This would also include Oligomenorrhea.

Hi Dalene,
Thank you for all the information that you gave us! but I do have a question I had been taking Vitex for over a month and I had been feeling some ovulation pains but I’m sure that I haven’t Ovulated! I have irregular cycles and my DR. gave me Provera in order to bring my period every two months but I decided in taking Vitex my question is what is the dosage that I should be taking? the Vitex that I had been taking is 500mg once a day, I also had a question can I take Provera and Vitex at the same time? or should I take Prover in order to bring my period and then take Vitex after my period is gone?
Thanks in advance for your time!

52 Dalene July 16, 2009

Hi Areli,

1000mg of Vitex a day. So twice a day for you. Don’t take while you are menstruating.

Vitex effects hormones without containing hormones itself, therefore it may react with the Provera which contains hormones. There has not been enough research as to how herbs and fertility medications will react to one another. We don’t ever recommend combining herbs with fertility medications.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

please help me, i’m 14 going on 15 and my periods have gone. i haven’t had sex or anything, they just dissapeared. i’m trying to eat more, but no noticeable anything yet.

any advice… please.

54 Hethir Rodriguez August 3, 2009

Hi Anon,

Have you spoken to you doctor about this? How long have they been gone for? What were your cycles like before. A multivitamin and healthy diet are very important for a healthy cycle. Whole foods, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, non-processed foods, and water can make a big difference.

55 Jenny August 24, 2009

I am 21 years old, I weigh 265.5 pounds my period has stopped coming. I haven’t had a period in like almost 2 yrs now. Before they stopped they was always irregular though. I have went to the doctor, and he just told me that I need to lose some weight, so now I’ve been eating more healthier, and at times when I use the restroom I notice things like my period is trying to come back now that I lost 10Ibs.What can I take to make it come back, and also flush out my body. I think this is another reason why I’m so fat to because I have to release this waste. So please help me bring this back. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

56 Hethir Rodriguez August 25, 2009

Hi Jenny,
I understand how frustrating it must be…
There are two things I would suggest.
1. Get on a serious plan to lose the weight. (Find someone to help coach you)
2. Do a cleanse to help jump start your weight loss and health.

One of the most effective ways I have seen to lose weight and get incredible health is to eat a raw food diet. You can learn more about this here: http://www.rawreform.com/index.php She is a wonderful person who has had great success losing weight and being super healthy. I wish you the best.

57 Sarah September 2, 2009

Hi Hethir,
I am 16 years old and my doctor put me on birth control pills-Yasmin 28 because I have PCOS and I lost my period about 2 years ago. I was on Yasmin 28 for about 5 months, since September 2008 until I decided to stop taking it because it gave me serious side effects, so he switched me to a different brand called Alesse 28. I found Alesse 28 to be much better but i still suffered many side effects such as bloating, very painful periods, heavy/dark periods, a change in vision, and a lot of weight gain. I use to weigh 40 kg when I first started taking Yasmin 28 then after I stopped I weighed 53 kg, later when i was put on Alesee 28 I gained 4 kg so for now i weigh 57 kg. I have taken Alesse 28 for about 4 months now and today (sept 2, 09) I went to see my doctor about my condition (PCOS). He told me that the only solution to my problem is to stay on birth control pills until I decide to get married and have a baby then I would also need fertility medications to help with my pregnancy. I can’t believe that there is no other solution to my problem (PCOS) rather than staying on birth control pills for the rest of my life until pregnancy. I wish to stop taking birth control pills and seek natural ways to boost my fertility and get my period to come back. Is there any natural way’s you can help me to get my period back. I surfed through your wonderful website and came along your fertility shop. I read about the fertility cleanse and the PCOS fertility kit as well as fertilica omega, baby and me multivitamin, fertility smoothie pack and the self fertility massage. I am wondering whether any of these products can help solve my case of PCOS. I am still young and eager to find natural ways to get my body back into its natural state and to bring back my period. My doctor suggests for me to stay on the pill until I decide to get married and have a baby, which may be for another 8 years, but isn’t there other ways to naturally bring back my period and treat PCOS (without always having to suffer many side effects while on birth control pills)? Great thanks Hethir for your wonderful information, and I hope to hear from you soon. :)

Sincerely, Sarah

58 Hethir Rodriguez September 2, 2009

Hi Sarah,
One of the best and most effective things you should look into is eating a PCOS diet as insulin resistance is the main reason for the hormonal imbalances which are causing you to not have a period. You can learn more about eating a PCOS diet here: http://natural-fertility-info.com/pcos-fertility-diet

Also do some more research on an herb called Vitex. It works wonderfully for women with PCOS: http://natural-fertility-info.com/vitex

Hope that helps! It is great that you are interested in your health at such a young age (around the same age I did :) )

59 Sarah September 2, 2009

Dear Hethir,

Thank-you so much for replying back, I really appreciate it. I read through most of your website and the link you posted above, therefore, I will definitely consider eating a PCOS diet. Regarding the herb vitex, I was thinking of trying out the PCOS fertility kit; however the kit already contains vitex, so would i still need to get the vitex that you sell seperately? or is the vitex that is included in the kit enough?

I am also thinking of trying out the 10 day smoothie challenge, therefore, is it fine to order the fertility smoothie pack and take it while on the fertility cleanse or on the PCOS fertility kit? Lastly, can I start with the fertility cleanse (since i lost my period for about 2 years and took birth control pills for about a year), while on the PCOS fertility kit? or should i do the cleanse separately, then continue on with the PCOS fertility kit? or are there any other suggestions? :)

Thanks for the helpful information! By the way, you ship to Canada right?

Truly, Sarah :D

60 Hethir Rodriguez September 2, 2009

Hi Sarah,
The PCOS kit does already come with Vitex. So that would be enough. The smoothies are great during the Fertility Cleanse, as well as during the PCOS Fertility Kit. For PCOS there is one modification to make sure when you make the smoothies. Do not use fruit juice in the recipes. Use water instead as fruit juice may make your blood sugar spike. You would do the Fertility Cleanse the first month ( you may want to order all the products in the cleanse minus the Conceptions Tea since you are not trying to get pregnant). The PCOS kit the second month onward. Yes we ship to Canada.

61 Sarah September 3, 2009

Hi Hethir,

Thanks so much for your advice!
About the smoothie, what do you mean, not using fruit juices in the recipes? I mean, does it have to be naturally squeezed fruits? Can i still include organic fruits (blueberries, mangoes, strawberry’s) in the smoothies? Because I love fruits and I eat them everyday. I also make my own lemonade by squeezing one lemon and adding water. So i was just wondering whether I can still drink natural fruit juices with no added sugar.

Thanks in advance! :D

62 Hethir Rodriguez September 3, 2009

As long as it is the whole fruit. Fruit without the fiber (like fruit juice) rushes into the system too fast causing spikes in blood sugar increasing insulin resistance. Lemon and water (without sugar) is great.

63 Sarah September 3, 2009

Hi Hethir,
I’m trying to add the fertility cleanse to my cart but its doesn’t seem to work and a note appears saying “The quantity of the following kit item in your cart has been adjusted to meet the available quantity we currently have in stock: “Liver Cleanse Tea 3oz.” I don’t understand why it does not work with me. In fact I tried to order both the PCOS fertility kit and the fertility cleanse together, however, only the PCOS fertility kit get’s added to my cart, and without the fertility cleanse. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks! :D

64 Hethir Rodriguez September 3, 2009

It has been fixed. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for letting us know!

65 Sarah September 4, 2009

No problem. Everything worked out great for me and I was able to order the fertility cleanse, PCOS kit, smoothie kit, personal massage, and the caster oil kit. Thanks so much for your help. :D

66 Sarah September 4, 2009

Hi Hethir,
I was just wondering how long the vitex in the PCOS kit would last me? How long do i have to take vitex for? How many capsules should i take per day (2 or 3)? and would i need to order more vitex, than the one that is included in the PCOS kit? Thanks for your help!

67 Hethir Rodriguez September 4, 2009

The PCOS kit will generally last you one month (all components including Vitex). The suggested usage is 3 per day. Vitex takes a while to have its effects so at least 3 months before you should see the full benefits.

69 Hethir Rodriguez September 9, 2009

It is hard to say. Many women miss a menstrual cycle every once and a while. It can be natural. If it goes on beyond another cycle then the herbs and suggestions on this page may help to balance you out and get your cycle going again.

70 ameeh September 10, 2009

I was on youtube and came upon your video about fertility cleanse and it mentioned that you should use it on the first day of your period. Well since i have irregular period and dont know when i will get my period how would i take it?

71 Hethir Rodriguez September 11, 2009

Hi Ameeh,

You would choose your own start date and start on that date.

72 rahma September 12, 2009

Hi Hethir

I have been told that i have pco and have very irregular periods. I am trying to conceive my second child but no luck. What can i do to regulate my period and i live in the UK

Thanks

73 Hethir Rodriguez September 12, 2009

Hi Rahma,

With PCOS, diet plays a big role as it helps to reduce insulin resistance. You can learn about natural therapies for PCOS and the PCOS Diet in this guide: http://natural-fertility-info.com/pcos-fertility-diet Hope that helps.

74 Chea October 12, 2009

Hi Hethir – can I take Vitex and/or Dong Quai while taking the fertility smoothie? Should I stop taking my OTC pre-natal vitamins? Or is it safe to continue taking my OTC pre-natal vitamins, fertility smoothie AND Vitex?

Depo shot 12 years, no period – want them back! My last Depo was 4 months ago.
30 years old, vegetarian, good health.

75 Dalene October 12, 2009

Hi Chea,

Vitex and Dong Quai have been found safe to take with the Fertility Smoothies. You may also take Prenatal Vitamins with these herbs.

Because you were on Depo for 12 years I highly recommend learning about the Fertility Cleanse. This cleanse helps to create a healthy foundation for conception and pregnancy. Birth Control is made up of synthetic hormones which may accumulate in your liver and fat cells. The Fertility Cleanse may help to detox your liver, helping to create hormonal balance and a healthy menstrual cycle.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

76 Lea October 22, 2009

Hi Hethir

I just want to say thank you for such a wonderful site.

I had an ectopic pregnancy in January this year and unfortunately one of my tubes had to be removed. I have been told that my remaining tube is free from blockages and scarring which is very reassuring but the only problem I have now is that my periods are irregular. I have recently started taking Vitex which I am hoping will help but was wondering if it is safe to take Dong Quai too?

Again. thank you for a great site and looking forward to your reply. Lea x

77 Dalene October 22, 2009

Hi Lea,

I want to let you know that there is hope for you! I personally know women who have conceived naturally with just one tube. I am sorry that you had such difficulties in the past, ectopic pregnancies are very tough!

You can combine Vitex and Dong Quai safely. Remember herbs work slowly over time, results are achieved after 3-6 cycles and up to 12 cycles. The key to herbs working effectively is consistency and proper dosage.

Traditional application for Vitex-
Capsules: 1,000mg a day is the suggested amount to use. Take vitex capsules all month long except during menstruation.

Tincture: Take 10-15 drops of vitex extract, taken 2-3 times a day all month long except during menstruation.

However, unlike powerful hormone drugs, vitex works slowly to normalize the body. Maximum benefits are often achieved after 6-12 cycles with vitex.

For Dong Quai: As a dietary supplement, take 2 capsules (2 caps = 1040mg) 3 times daily, preferably with meals.

Thanks for your support,

Dalene

78 ameeh October 28, 2009

Hi I was recently diagnosed with gallstone. What do you suggest I do because I have irregular periods and want to conceive?

79 Dalene October 29, 2009

Hi Ameeh,

“Excess estrogen from pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy, or birth control pills appears to increase cholesterol levels in bile and decrease gallbladder movement, both of which can lead to gallstones.”*

There are also many other factors such as obesity, ethnicity, gender, age, diabetes, fasting, cholesterol-ruducing medications and rapid weight loss.
The one that stuck out the most that can effect fertility is the excess estrogen. This would also effect your menstrual cycle. Have you read our Progesterone Fertility Guide? This guide can help you to determine if you are estrogen dominant and low on progesterone.
*Womens Health and Gallstones

Without knowing any of your additional health history I would say you may need to reduce estrogen and increase progesterone. This may also help you to bring back a normal menstrual cycle.

I am 22 yrs old and have only had my period two times when I was 15.I am fairly thin (95 lbs, 5′1) and very active. Does this mean I am infertile and unable to get pregnant? Is there anything I can do?

81 Dalene November 16, 2009

Hi Juddy,

Being an athlete that is very active and your low weight may be contributing factors to your absent menstruation. Have you been to see a doctor about this? If not I think you should. If you are not having a period you are probably not ovulating. The Natural Fertility Diet may help you. Nutrition is the foundation for good fertility, you may need to include whole-fat foods. Fats are necessary for producing hormonal balance. Fats are not the enemy; they provide essential vitamins not found anywhere else. Be sure to include a variety of fats. This means no low fat diets. Focus on clean fats from clean animals and oils that come from olives, flax, avocados, nuts, seeds, and fish.

Without knowing more about your health history and lifestyle it is difficult to answer you properly. Herbs may help some. Since you have already read the How to Get your Period Back page you have learned what herbs may help. Nothing may help until you gain a bit more weight, but no one can determine that for sure except a qualified health care practioner.

I hope you can figure this out! Best Wishes!

I have been off the pill for about a year and am still not getting normal menstrual cycles. I have had a few cycles since I went off but they are months apart. I have had a lot of mood issues and problems with acne. I am taking Vitex fruit and that helps some. I took birth control for about 13-14 years and took a variation of pills. I am not trying to get pregnant, but stopped taking pills due to the hormone side effects I was starting to have the last year that I was on the pill. Can anyone provide any advice on this?

83 Kaci December 3, 2009

Hi,

I am 29 with two young kids. I recently started having irreguler periods, I miss one then have a 3 or 4 week long one and spotting through each month. I have been taking fertility blend for 7 weeks and my doctor just prescribed me Provera 10mg for 10 days. Can I take both together or should I just use the Provera. I just want to get regular again!!

Thanks!

84 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula December 4, 2009

Hi Ellen,

The first thing I think of when women tell me they have been on the pill for long periods of time is the Fertility Cleanse. Birth Control pills contain synthetic hormones which over time can build up in your liver and fat cells as well as other places in the body. It may be a good idea to start out with a cleanse to renew your body, blood, and uterus. There are specific herbs that help to support the liver to getting rid of excess hormones and toxins. There are also herbs and nutrients that support the uterus to cleanse of old contents and stagnant blood. This is good because when you are not having a regular menstrual cycle your uterus is not cleansing itself each month as it should, which may cause old blood and tissues to build up.

Vitex is a great herb for balancing hormones and bringing back normal ovulation, but it is important to take the proper dosage.
General Directions for use of Vitex
Capsules: 1,000mg a day is the suggested amount to use. Take vitex capsules all month long except during menstruation.

Tincture: Take 10-15 drops of vitex extract, taken 2-3 times a day all month long except during menstruation.

However, unlike powerful hormone drugs, vitex works slowly to normalize the body. Maximum benefits are often achieved after 6-12 cycles with vitex.

Without knowing anything else about you and your health history Maca may be a good choice for you if you are looking to balance your hormones naturally.

Maca is a nourishing food for the endocrine system, aiding both the pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid glands (all involved in hormonal balance.) Maca has the ability to affect key hormones in both women and men without containing hormones itself.

Maca has been found to stimulate and nourish the pituitary gland, acting as a tonic for the hormone system. When the pituitary gland functions optimally, the entire endocrine system becomes balanced, because the pituitary gland controls the hormone output of the other three glands.

Self Fertility Massage™ is a series of massage techniques that are used to help support reproductive health, the menstrual cycle, and your fertility.
Increases circulation to the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes*
Promotes hormonal balance by strengthening the hormonal feedback loop*
Helps the body to rid itself of old stagnant blood and tissues*
Helps to reposition a tilted uterus*
Helps to regulate ovulation*
Helps to clear congestion caused from cysts*
Promotes hormonal balance *
Improves communication within endocrine system*
Helps to reduce stress and stress hormones*

I hope this helps you begin to think of what natural therapies may help you get your cycle to regulate and hormones balance.

Hi Kaci,

I am not sure what the fertility blend is. What is the product name? Is it one of our products? We don’t recommend taking any fertilty herbs while on fertility medicatons such as Provera.

86 Amy December 21, 2009

Hello,
I am 24 years old and I suffer from not having my period every month. Las year I only had it for four times and twice this year. I stop taking birth control pills a year ago and when I stop my period also stop. One doctor told me that I have to much male hormones, then another said that I was over weight. Then my friend introduce me to webiste and here I am. Can you please tell me what I can use or take to help me out with my period.

Thank you very much.

87 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula December 22, 2009

Hi Amy,

Have you read our Absent Periods Page? This page is full of great tips on how to regulate your period. Here are the steps you may want to learn about to get your period back:

1. Natural Fertility Diet. Diet is so important for a healthy menstrual cycle and reproductive system. What you eat impacts everything.

2. Whole food multivitamin. Iron deficiency is one of the major factors for women not having a menstrual cycle and lack of ovulation. Other nutritional deficiencies can cause the menstruation to cease.

3. Learn about herbs that have been found to help clear the stagnant blood and increase circulation to the uterus while balancing the hormones.

Traditionally the best Herbs for amenorrhea (lack of menstruation)

If you have not had a menstrual cycle for two or more months you may want to learn about Fertility Cleansing. The Fertility Cleanse may help to cleanse the uterus of old blood and tissues while helping the liver to get rid of excess hormones.

Be patient, the body needs time to establish a cycle and hormone balance. Be gentle with yourself and your body will come back into balance.

Have you heard about our e-mail Fertility Consultation? It is difficult for us to answer your questions based on just a small piece of the bigger picture of your health. Hi Ameeh,

Look to balance hormones by learning about a Fertility Cleanse, using the herb Vitex and/or the herbal blend Pregnancy Prep. Many times fertility issues and hormonal imbalance can be corrected by diet changes. Have you looked into eating a nutrient dense whole food diet such as the Natural Fertility Diet? You may want to try these first.

Hi

I hope you can help me.
im 23 and married. We had our first baby over 2 years ago, but she was still born at 6 months. Well we are ready to try agin but i dont have reg periods. but in fact i havent had one on my own, man its been awhile. now the doc did have me on bc to make me reg. but i dont wanna take it any more. I had really bad break through bleeding when i would first start it. i thought it helped with cramps and the flow? well i havent been on bc for months now and i saw something on fertilty cleanse..do u think i should try this??

90 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 13, 2010

Hi Candace,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, that must have been very hard for you.

Without knowing more about your healthy history and lifestyle it is hard to say whether the Fertility Cleanse would be right for you. The Fertility Cleanse has been chosen by many women as a place to begin their natural fertility journey.

Benefits of the Fertility Cleanse that may relate to you-
There are specific herbs that help to support the liver to getting rid of excess hormones and toxins. There are also herbs and nutrients that support the uterus to cleanse of old contents and stagnant blood. Having had a miscarriage, this type of cleansing may be beneficial.

Birth Control contains synthetic hormones that can build up in your liver and fat cells creating hormonal imbalance, the Fertility Cleanse is designed to help your body rid itself of these synthetic hormones.

Have you thought of a Natural Fertility Consultation? If you are someone who has questions about what natural fertility therapies may be right for you the Natural Fertility Consultation may be for you.

HI
I was on birth control for about 10 years and when I stopped taking them, my period completely stopped. how do I get it back. my husband and I are not ready for A baby yet. I just don’t want to be on birth control I just want to clean out my body. how can I do it

92 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 15, 2010

Hi Ruth,

You are not alone, I get this question all the time.

Birth control contains synthetic hormones which may over time build up in the liver and fat cells of your body. Fertility Cleansing may be able to help rid your body of those synthetic hormones which in turn may help to create a healthy foundation for hormonal balance. Because your period has not been regular you may also have a situation of stagnation in your uterus. Old blood, tissues and mucous are not able to be expelled because there is not regular menstruation. There are specific herbs that help to support the liver to getting rid of excess hormones and toxins. There are also herbs and nutrients that support the uterus to cleanse of old contents and stagnant blood. If you would like to learn more about Fertility Cleansing click here: The Fertility Cleanse

94 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 18, 2010

Hi Candace,

I am not sure why your last question was not replied to.

The Fertility Cleanse Kit is often used first when a woman would like to get her period back. I cannot say whether this is a good choice for you or not. Many women who are experiencing irrugular to no menstruation choose the cleanse as a place to begin their journey to getting their period back. The Natural Fertility Consultation is designed to get an in depth consultation with an herbalist to figure out the best therapies, foods, herbs, and supplements for your particular situation.

95 Lisa January 18, 2010

Hi,

I’m not quite sure what my next step on my journey is. I have been a part of this community for quite sometime. I am trying to get my period back and has been a long time. I have done the fertiliy cleanse back in September, then went to do the Increase Egg Health as I was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure 2 yrs ago. I also started taking a tincture of the dong quai & vitex at the same time as the IEH kit. So far, nothing. Not even spotting, even after the cleanse. I also take maca, royal jelly, efa’s, raw whole-food multi, super greens and I eat very healthy, mostly organic. I have noticed a big difference with my libido (sorry if TMI) it has greatly increased, as well as my energy. But still no period. Is there anything else you can suggest??

Frustrated,
Lisa

96 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 20, 2010

Hi Lisa,

What is your age?
Have you gotten a diagnosis? Has a doctor mentioned any hereditary or genetic issues?
What is your body weight/ fat%?
Do you take an iron supplement?
Do you workout or play sports a lot?
What has your cycle record been?
How long without a period?
Do you ovulate?
Have you been consistent with taking all of the remedies?

If there is a genetic problem natural remedies fall short. I am sorry this is so hard for you.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

Hi,

I am 23 years old and my husband and I are trying to have our first baby. I was on the depo shot for 7 and a half years, and I am trying to get my body back. I have been off the shot since September of 2009 and I still haven’t got my period back yet. I bought the basal thermometer and also the ovulation kit and I am still not ovulating, I also still don’t have a period back. I was wondering if there are any suggestions that may help my body to start ovulating and to start my period again so my husband and I can hopefully conceive sometime soon. I never thought I would ever say “I wish I had my period” until now….Thank you and I appreciate all suggestions.

98 Andrea January 24, 2010

Hi Dalene,

I came across this website, trying to figure out the best solution for my irregular menstruation.

For starters, I live in the Philippines and got married in 2008. Prior getting hitched, my period is always regular. That is why when I got delayed for the first time, I thought I am already pregnant. When my menstruation was delayed again for the 2nd time, I already went to see an OB-Gyn. She prescribed me some medicines to induce my menstruation. I was also diagnosed with PCOS. I took clomid for a month then stopped but I noticed that my menstruation becomes very light and missed a cycle too afterwards.

This year, when I had a check up again, my OB prescribed me with povera to induce menstruation since I missed my period last December. Although I got my period, the way I menstruate is like spotting only. I am really terrified so I again consulted her and my OB explained to me that once you are in pills, you will really have a very light menstruation. I am also taking birth control pills in order to normalize my menstruation.

Right now, I am looking into alternative medicine as well. I am considering accupunture and I am also regulating my food intake. I am 5′2 and my weight as of now is 154 pounds.

My question is, is it okay that I take vitex, Co-Q10 while on a birth control pill. Or are there any alternatives?

Is it really important for me to lose weight so that my regular cycle will get back as well.

I hope you can help me. I know I live miles away but I really need other suggestions and comments.

Thank you,

Andrea

99 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 25, 2010

Hi Nikki,

Somehow our society has come to think that menstruation is a burden, but it is actually a healthy, natural sign of fertility. We need to have a healthy menstrual cycle in order to conceive and have healthy babies and bodies. So many women do not have this, not having a period is not a natural state of being for a grown woman.

Many women have had great success with the Fertility Cleanse Kit, the herbs Dong Quai and Vitex. Birth Control contains synthetic hormones which have to be filtered by the liver, these hormones can build up in the liver and fat cells causing hormonal imbalance. Not having a period may also cause uterine stagnation, nothing is being cleansed from the uterus when you are not having a mentstrual cycle. The Fertility Cleanse may help your body to cleanse itself of synthetic horomones, old stagnant tissues and blood. Have you read our Absent Period page? This page may help you to learn which natural remedies are best for bringing back a healthy menstrual cycle. I hope you can figure this out and go on to conceiving a baby!

Hi Andrea,

Have you looked into the PCOS Diet? This way of eating is to help with the insulin yo-yo, not necessarily to help you loose weigh, but this way of eating may help you to shed pounds. A big part of the problem with PCOS is the high insulin resistance. Resistance to insulin increases the bodies insulin levels which effects normal ovulation by preventing the body from ovulating or limiting the maturation process of the released egg. Eating a specific PCOS Fertility Diet is one of the best things you can do to improve your chances of becoming pregnant.

Birth Control is enabling you to have a “regular menstrual cycle”, but it is designed to make you not ovulate. The herb Vitex is unique in that it works with your body to help you ovulate regularly. We do not recommend taking Vitex and Birth Control at the same time. CoQ10 is safe to take while on fertility medications. You can eat a PCOS Diet while on birth control. Remember birth control is making you NOT ovulate, it is helping you to have a period, but not solving your fertility issue-PCOS.

We ship internationally if you are interested in any of our products.

Have you considered a Natural Fertility Consultation? Many of our readers know they want to try natural therapies to help boost their fertility but don’t know which ones are bet for their personal situation.

If you are someone who has questions about what natural fertility therapies may be right for you the Natural Fertility Consultation is for you.

Hi Dalene,

Thank you for your advice, I will look into all those things. I read about the Dong Quai and it seems like that will bring my cycle back?!? Can I only purchase that online? I’m going to read about the absent period now. Thank you for your suggestions!! I appreciate it.

Hi Nikki,

We only sell our Dong Quai in our Fertility Shop on line. Dong Quai can be purchased from herbalists and health food stores.

Hi Dalene,

Sorry for the late response, I’ve been having computer problems…..to answer your questions, I will be 37 in March, I got a diagnosis from my RE 2 yrs ago that I had premature ovarian failure. My cycle was always normal (28-30days and fairly heavy) until I went off BC (2004). Ever since then it was always sporadic & light. I am not an active person (guess I should be) and I am a bit overweight (5′7 166lbs) I never had any symptoms of POF until I started taking fertility drugs (clomid–6 months) and then puregon shots for 3 months. That’s when I started having hotflashes & some nightsweats. Once I started taking herbs though, these all went away. I have been very consistent with the herbs but more then ever since last October. I haven’t had a period since around June (just spotting) I am pretty sure I ovulated last month :) only cause I saw a lot of eggwhite cervical mucous, which I hadn’t seen in a very long time!! Now, today I started spotting again (yaY!)
I have never been checked for any genetic thing.

Thanks again, for any advice,
Lisa

104 Nikki January 27, 2010

Hi Dalene,

I just wanted to let you know that I am now ovulating, I’ve been doing an at home ovulation test for a while now and I finally got my first positive yesterday morning (Tuesday), so that means I should be ovulating within the next 36 hours. I also did a cervix mucus check and that also came out as ovulation is about to occur. I am so happy that it is all coming together.

My next question for you is….can I get pregnant without having my period back? I haven’t had a period is so long due to the depo shot and and I am not sure if I can become pregnant without it. I heard that I could but I just wanted other peoples decisions as well.

Thank you for your help…

Nikki

105 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 27, 2010

Hi Lisa,

Wow what a challenge you are going through! Sounds like you are getting some good results with the herbs. The key with herbs is consistency. It can take many cycles to achieve results when using herbs. Be patient. Have you considered a Natural Fertility Consultation, learn all about one here: CONSULTATION

106 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 27, 2010

Hi Nikki,

That is great! If you are ovulating you can get pregnant. When you say the depo shot, do you mean the birth control Depo Provera? That would prevent you from getting pregnant.

Warmly,

Dalene

107 Nikki January 27, 2010

Yes I do mean the depo provera. I have been off it since September 9, 2009 and have not got my period back yet. I was on depo provera for 7 and a half years. I got off it right after my wedding because my husband and I want to conceive a baby. My doctor told me that if I was not ovulating by the time i went back to her, then she was going to put me on something help me get going, but now i am ovulating. I was just wondering since i am ovulating now and have not got my period back yet, can i still get pregnant without a period back? Thanks again.

hi

im 16 years old and i havent gotten my period for 2 months, ive never had sex so im not pregnant for sure, and i dont take any pills. i do however have a poor diet im about 5′6 and only weigh 103 ….is there any foods you can please recommend me or something to make my period come back.. i dont want to go to the doctor because i faint at the thought of a blood test

109 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 28, 2010

Nikki,

If you are ovulating there is a chance you could get pregnant, but working toward a healthy menstrual cycle may be a good idea. Our bodies menstruated to clear out the lining of the uterus and egg because it was not fertilized, this process in its entirety is important and healthy.

Hi Jessica,

Eating a fertility diet for healthy and balanced fertility is one of the most powerful health changes you can make. Numerous studies have shown that specific changes to the diet can increase the chances of healthy ovulation, prevent recurrent miscarriage and lead to a healthy pregnancy.

Nutrition plays a big roll when it comes to having a healthy body and reproductive system. You may want to learn about the Nutrient Dense Fertility Diet here: Fertility Diet

Gaining weight through proper nutrition by eating a nutrient dense whole food diet may increase your chances of getting your period to normalize.

Hi. I was recently diagnosed with PCOS and my doctor prescribed me Metformin. Do you think i can still take it with Vitex

112 Kerry January 30, 2010

Hi,

So, i’ve always been irregular and i would like to try to get regular, or at least just have a period. Im not looking to have a baby though i do want one someday. However im 26 and i’ve only had my period about 10 times total, last one was 2 years ago and when i do they last for a little over a month.

I went to a doctor when i was 22 and he said everything was fine, however i dont have health insurance so i cant go again. would you recomend trying the fertility clenser and then the herbs to try to jump start my period? or would it be fine if i just did the herbs. ive been looking into the recemendation of Vitex.

113 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 1, 2010

Hi Ameeh,

Does Vitex interfere with medications my Dr. prescribed?
Vitex is quite safe when used in its whole form. However, because of its influence on hormonal balance, it is suggested to avoid use with birth control drugs or hormone replacement therapy.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

114 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 1, 2010

Hi Kerry,

It would be best to know for sure what is going on with your body, to know what is causing your periods to be irregular. Please think about seeing a doctor.

Fertility Cleansing may be a good place to begin as it may help to create hormonal balance. There are specific herbs that help to support the liver to getting rid of excess hormones and toxins. There are also herbs and nutrients that support the uterus to cleanse of old contents and stagnant blood. Vitex may also help to get your period back. There is no way for me to guide you in the right direction without knowing more about your personal situation. Have you considered a Natural Fertility Consultation? If you are someone who has questions about what natural fertility therapies may be right for you the Natural Fertility Consultation may be for you.

All the Best,

Dalene

Hi Vinny,

Have you ever been to a doctor about this? It may be helpful for you to know what is going on with your body.

I see that you have read our page on How To Get Your Period Back. Have you considered all of the tips on this page? The herbs Dong Quai and Vitex may be best for irregular periods. Sometimes all it takes is eating right. Our Natural Fertility Diet may help with this. Many of our readers know they want to try natural therapies to help boost their fertility but don’t know which ones are bet for their personal situation. If you are someone who has questions about what natural fertility therapies may be right for you our Natural Fertility Consultation might be a great place to start.

117 Andrea February 3, 2010

Hi Dalene,

Thank you for your response to my first inquiry.

I am so happy to tell you that my menstruation was back to normal after a 5 day spotting period. I was not convinced with my OB-Gyn when she told me that every person who is under the pill, will have a lesser/spotting menstrual flow.

When I read about your fertility massage, I realised that somehow a full body massage will help to regulate my menstruation. So I asked our regular massage therapist (who is very well skilled) about my spotting menstruation period. She massaged my whole body, focusing to my tummy and after 2 days, I menstruate heavily.

My only dilemma is.. it seems that my period won’t stop. Is there something wrong with me or do you think this is because of not menstruating for a month and lets include also my mentsrual period last November (similar to a spotting menstruation).

Will accupuncture works as well t regulate my period?

Hope you could give me your insight once again.

Thank you,

Andrea

118 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 4, 2010

Hi Andrea,

Your massage sounds delightful! There is no way for me to say what is causing the abnormal menstruation. If you are on the “pill” please ask your doctor about this kind of bleeding.

Acupuncture may help to regulate your cycles. But natural therapies have to work against the effects of fertility medications such as the “pill”. Please talk to an acupuncturist about this.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

119 Perry February 7, 2010

Hello Hethir,
Ive been reading your site and advice all day and it has been really useful to me.
I was wondering if you could help me further by explaining to me about this. About 2 years ago I came off the pill after 6 years, In the roughly 2 months I was off the Pill I lost alot of weight and continually bleed for about 6 weeks, I saw my Doctor who put me back on the pill for the next few months after that my period ceased and I continued loosing weight (all up about 10 kilos) and became depressed. My Doctor then changed my pill to one specifically for skin (as I have had problems with acne too).
In the last few days my fiance and I decided to come off the pill as shortly after we are married we are hoping to try and concieve.
But I was wondering what was happening with my hormones that was different to everybody else’s, as they have normally post pill amenorrhea ?
Is this likely excessive bleeding likely to happen again?
and would the Vitex/ Dong qui herbs you talk about on here help me also?

Thankyou for all your help and advice, this site is super useful!

120 Claudia February 7, 2010

Hi,
I am 19 year old athlete who has irregular periods. About two years ago I was on birth control to help me have regular periods and to ease early period cramps while I ran. I have stopped taking the pill because it makes me really ill. I weigh 88lbs and I eat a lot without gaining hardly any weight. I was wondering the following: where to get the herbs, how long would I need to take them to get my period flowing again, and how much do they cost.

Thank you,
Claudia

121 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 8, 2010

Hi Perry,

Wow, that sounds like a rough experience for you. Did you discuss with your doctor your concerns? It is hard to say what type of hormonal imbalance was causing this type of problem. There are so many different kinds of birth control it is hard to know what to say. There is no way for anyone to know if your excessive bleeding will come back. Are you anemic? If you have excessive bleeding again please ask your doctor to test your iron levels, you may want to think about taking an iron supplement.

Vitex may help with acne, long periods, excessive bleeding and hormonal imbalances caused from getting off birth control. Dong Quai is referred to as a blood tonic as it has a general effect on circulation. This could be helpful for women experiencing pale menstrual flow, absent periods, and weakness after periods (in TCM this is called blood deficient). It has also been shown to improve red blood cell counts. It is traditionally used for situations of stagnation (PCOS, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and fibroids) as it increases the blood flow to the reproductive system reducing congestion and pain. Because of this Dong Quai may not be the best choice for excessive bleeding.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

ps. no worries about the names!:)

122 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 8, 2010

Hi Claudia,

I think it is very important for you to research any herbs you are interested in before choosing to purchase them. I also urge you because of your age and weight to try and find an herbalist or naturopathic doctor in your area who can work one on one with you to help you choose the best herbs for your personal situation.

Many of our readers know they want to try natural therapies to help boost their fertility but don’t know which ones are bet for their personal situation.

If you are someone who has questions about what natural fertility therapies may be right for you the Natural Fertility Consultation is for you. To learn more about our consultations click here: Natural Fertility Consultations

Herbs are most effective when used over many months, it is generally suggested to use them for 6-12 months.

125 sophie öge February 12, 2010

hi,
i was diagnosed with PCOS when i was about 17 years old. now i’m 38, and until a few years ago it wasn’t really a problem as i thought i would never want a child. but things can change dramatically and after finding deep love the want of a child became very strong. i looked around unsuccessfully to find a natural way to heal myself and then opted for chemical aids with clomid and artificial insemination. i got pregnant at the first try but it was an extrauterine pregnancy and i had to take some kind of chemotherapy to have the misplaced fetus removed. since then it has been clear to me that i can’t rely on chemical drugs and i found you ;-) .
i started the diet 2 month ago and had periods for the first time, since this chemotherapy in october, right after starting the diet, but since then they didn’t come back. i have ordered a lot of stuff from your site but it hasn’t arrived yet. i live in a country where it is very hard to find natural treatments. i have the feeling to walk in the dark, and have become overemotional these days. when i become like this i have the tendency to stop believing in what i know, that i should trust myself and heal myself with nature’s power and meditation. i tend to want to go back to chemical drugs with the false pretend that it will work better.
i feel my biological clock’s on a roller-coaster.
i feel much better in my body since starting the diet. i have never been overweight though, and so i am thinking maybe the diet is not enough…
what do you think?
thank you for this great site and for giving me the opportunity to believe, even if not every day, that nature can help me if i help myself with it.
take care
sophie

126 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 15, 2010

Hi Sophie,

The PCOS Diet is beneficial for insulin resistance which is a common problem with PCOS. Resistance to insulin increases the bodies insulin levels which effects normal ovulation by preventing the body from ovulating or limiting the maturation process of the released egg. This diet helps with this and may help overweight people lose weight, but this diet is not specifically for weight loss. Natural therapies/remedies for PCOS are not as effective without the PCOS Diet changes.

If you ever choose to go back to fertility medications you can still follow the PCOS Diet for optimal benefits for your health. Have you thought of working with a Naturopathic Doctor or Herbalist in your area? This may help you, these practitioners can monitor your progress and adjust and recommend herbs, supplements ect. to your specific needs.

Thanks for your support.

I am 32 1/2yrs old I have not a a period since 2000-2001 I was told that the lining of my uterus was gone and that it is about half the size that it should be…Will the Fertility Cleanse help? Also once I get my period back and get pregnant will the size of my uterus be a problem?

128 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 22, 2010

Hi Kenya,

It is difficult for us to answer your questions based on just a small piece of the bigger picture of your health. It is helpful for us to know your lifestyle, health history, fertility challenges and detailed questions. That is why Hethir has created Fertility Consultations. This will better help us to guide you in the right direction for bringing about a balanced body and fertility. Honestly we need more information to serve you better. Please understand we hold you and your health in high regard and want nothing more than to help you help yourself achieve a healthy, fertile body.

I just don’t have the proper information to help you. To ask me more detailed questions please write to me at info@natural-fertility-info.com. If you would like to learn more about Natural Fertility Consultations click here: Consultation

It will be difficult to carry a baby to term if your uterine lining is not healthy. It will also be difficult for an embryo to attatch to the uterine wall. The first thing you may want to focus on is getting your period back, without it you will not even be ovulating. The Fertility Cleanse kit may be a good place to begin, but without knowing why you are having the fertility challenges you are facing, there is no way for me to say where you should begin.

Hi

l have not had a period for almost a year now, but have been suffering from hot flushes, and increasing levels of passing water, My GP has advised me that l am at pre-menopause stage. l would like to think that there is something l can take to bring my periods back as l really would like to have children one day before the ‘change’ completely takes over. Can you pls suggest any remedies? l am 44yrs

130 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 25, 2010

Hi Jessy,

I am sorry to say that at your age if you have begun to go through menopause there really is no way to reverse this. There are some supplements that may help extend your fertility a little longer such as L-Arginine, but we cannot stop our bodies natural processes.

Best Wishes,

Hi

ls there anything you could recommend to ease the symptoms (hot flushes, lack of sleep, passing water). Am l now at final stages of menopause.

132 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 3, 2010

Hi Jessy,

The herb Black Cohosh is effective for menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, headache, fatigue, depression, vaginal thinning and dryness, flooding and spotting. Please speak with your local herbalist or someone in the wellness department of your local health food store about a dosage for your personal situation.

Hello,
I am 24 yrs old and my hsband and i are trying to conceive. We have been trying for 2 months which i know is not that long but i am a little worried that it will be hard. I have always had irregular cycle. My last period was 4 days long and it was not a normal flow. I am now on day 35 of this cycle and still nothing. I dont even think i have ovulated yet. I take my BBT every morning which is why i know that i havent O’ed. Ive had a couple ultrasounds before and they both showed that i didnt have pcos. ive also had my thyroid checked and that was normal too. Something must be wrong somewhere for me to have irregular cycles like this. I took BC for 3 years but have been off it for 4 yrs now. after i stoped i didnt get a period for 7 months. now sometimes its every other month but never regular. Any advice? Vitex? progesterone cream? Thank you so much in advance. I am loving your site!

134 Lisa March 5, 2010

Hello! I am high in prolactin. I am taking Femaprin (Vitex) to try to induce my period. I am also taking evening primrose oil. Do you know if evening primrose oil raises estrogen or prolactin? I have thinning hair that’s why I decided to try the evening primrose. I heard it may block dht. But can I take it together with the Vitex? I just want my prolactin level to go down and I’m worried if my estrogen is increased that it might affect the action of the Femaprin. I am unsure. Thanks!

135 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 9, 2010

Hi Nathalie,

Refering to the “How to Get Your Period Back” article will help you to decide what herbs may be best for you. Because I don’t have a health history for you or know anything about your lifestyle it is hard to say what may be a good direction for you to go. What ever herb you do choose it is important to remember that consistency over time is the key to herbs working with your body to bring it back into balance. Diet is also very important. Many women who have been on birth control for years choose to begin with the Fertility Cleanse to create a foundation for hormonal balance and Dong Quai for bringing back consistent menstruation. We also offer Natural Fertility Consultations for women like you who would like a guide for thier specific fertility challenges.

All the best,

Dalene

136 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 9, 2010

Hi Lisa,

I haven’t found any research that shows Evening Primrose to have an estrogenic effect or been known to raise prolactin. It has been used to reduce breast engorgement and pain due to PMS. You can use it while using Vitex, but you must use it only before ovulation.

Evening Primrose – Dose is 1500 – 3000 mg once daily. Take
from your period till ovulation, than switch to fish oil.
Evening Primrose Oil can cause uterine contractions in
pregnancy, which is why you should not take it past ovulation (in
case you get pregnant.)

140 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 16, 2010

Hi Mari,

Have you been to see a gynecologist? It would be good to talk to your parents about this and work together to choose a doctor that is right for you. Becuase you are a teenager, if you choose to take herbs it would be best to work with an herbalist in your area, so that you can get the proper dosage for someone your age.

You have already read our “How to Get Your Period Back” article, each of the tips on this page may help you to get your period back. I am not sure doing a cleanse at your age is a good idea. In your case you may just need to eat differently. You can learn about eating a Natural Fertility Diet here: whole food diet

Taking whole food women’s multivitamin may also be very beneficial.

Hi Mary,

Without knowing more about your health history, lifestyle, and fertility challenges, ect. it is very difficult for me to answer this question. How long did you take Dong Quai for? For herbs to be effective they need to be taken consistently over time, at least 3-6 months and sometimes beyond that. You may want to consider seeing a practioner, herbalist or Naturopathic Doctor in your area. that way you have someone to work one on one with. You may also want to learn about our Natural Fertility Consultations.

142 Zee March 17, 2010

Hello,
I am a 39 years old & have never had children. I have been married for six years & my husband & I are trying to conceive. I went to a fertility specialist and he basically said that my left ovary( i only have one due to a previous surgery to remove scar tissue from an appendectomy I had as a youth). is not producing eggs anymore. I just believe that this is not the answer and there are natural products that would help. The doctor was not nice and very negative. I have taken Vitex, Maca, & False Unicorn but don’t know if I took it long enough. I havent had a full period just spotting every few months but my body cramps and craves every month. I am just not bleeding and dont know if I am ovulating.
Please Help

143 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 19, 2010

Hi Zee,

Herbs work their best when taken cosistently over time, especially Vitex, Maca & False Unicorn Rt. We don’t generally suggest using False Unicorn Rt. because it is on the endangered species list. If you would like to use this herb please consult an herbalist in your area for proper dosage and a sustainable source. Have you ever tried charting your cycle? You may be ovulating and not even know it.

Here is a 3 part series about Charting your menstrual cycle:

Part one
Part two
Part three

While you have given me some information on your situation honestly it is not enough for me to guide you in the best direction for your situation. You may want to learn about our Natural Fertility Consultations.

Hi leeann,

I see that you have read our How to Get your Period Back article. This article gives you the best tips for natural ways to get your period back from home. Diet and Exercise are very important and are the foundation for good health and fertility. You may want to think about your diet, stress levels and exercise regimen. 148 Abby April 10, 2010

Hi Hethir,

I am 15 and I started my period when I was 12. At first they used to come every other month, but as time went on it became more and more irregular. The last time I had my period was almost a year ago. I went to the doctors, where they took a blood test, but said its probably because of my age.

Recently I read something about endroetriosis and became worried as my mum had it, it said that I had an increased chance, though its more common in women over 20.

My diet is pretty much the same as my sister and mums, though with a few extra snacks. My weight is also average. I have recently started taking vitamins, but their periods are normal.

Is there any suggestions? I dont know what to do? Ive tried everything I can think of except herbs? do they really work and are there any side effects? Also, I’d prefer not to take any medicatations and like to stick to the most natrual solutions if possible.

Thanks, Abby :)

149 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula April 12, 2010

Hi Abby,

Because of your age it may be best for you to find a Naturopathic Doctor and/or an herbalist to work with. That way they can diagnose you, consult with you about your health history, nutritional intake and adjust the dosage and suggest the best herbs for your unique situation.

The dosage for herbs for teens is different than for adults. Your body is still maturing and growing, and your weight may still fluctuate. Herbs do work. The key with herbs is to take them consistently over time. Herbs somtimes take many months to be effective, so having patience helps.

I hope you can find a holistic practitioner in your area. Have your mom/dad help you.

Best Wishes,
