Fertility Superfoods to Help You Get Pregnant

Fertility Superfoods to Help You Get Pregnant

If you have not found out yet, I am crazy about superfoods. Super foods are foods that are nutrient-dense, have an abundance of minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and other beneficial ingredients in high amounts.

Superfoods should be a part of every couple’s fertility diet to help bridge the gap for proper nutrition, nourish the egg and the sperm, and help to balance hormones.

Here is a rundown of 5 Fertility Superfoods you should know about:

Maca is a wonderful superfood from Peru that helps to balance the hormones, increase egg health, increase sperm count and sperm health, while also being a tonic for the endocrine system. Maca also helps to increase progesterone if the body is low in this important hormone. Maca comes in capsules, powder and tincture. It can be taken every day.

Royal Jelly
Royal jelly is another fertility-specific superfood that may help to increase egg health, quality of egg, and general fertility. Royal jelly is the food that is fed to the queen bee which is what makes her the queen bee. She goes on to live 6 years and lays up to 2000 eggs per day. Most bees live less than two months.

Rich in vitamins, A, B, C, and D, royal jelly also contains minerals including calcium and iron, all of the essential amino acids, plus antibacterial and immune-stimulating properties. Royal jelly comes in capsules or in a base of honey. It can be taken every day.

Bee Propolis and Bee Pollen
Bee propolis and bee pollen are two more fertility superfoods from our friends, the bees. These foods are rich in nutrients. Bee pollen contains 50% more protein than beef and is rich in many vitamins and minerals. Bee propolis is a powerful immune system stimulant and inflammation aid. It also helps women who have endometriosis.

Bee propolis and Bee Pollen are available in capsules or in a base of honey in the product Active Bee Power. They can be taken every day. I like to take all three together in one product.

Whey Protein Powder
While we all know that protein is essential for a healthy diet, many women do not get enough protein in their daily diet. In the fertility diet, it is essential to have protein with each meal so your blood sugar levels stay balanced. This can be hard in our daily lifestyles so I suggest you use a protein powder. But it can be hard to find a protein powder that is acceptable with a healthy fertility diet. All protein sources should be organic or raised without hormones and antibiotics, and the protein source should never be soy.

I have found one protein powder that is made from “clean” whey, which means it was made from cows’ milk that does not have any hormones or antibiotics. It is called FertiliWhey. FertiliWhey does not contain sugars, dyes, or artificial ingredients. This has been essential in many women sticking to their fertility diet.

Greens powder
A great way to make sure you are getting all of your greens on a daily basis. A healthy fertility diet that is rich in whole foods and dark green vegetables builds a strong foundation for fertility and reproductive health. Some of the most beneficial greens powders are spirulina, wheat grass, barley, alfalfa, Kamut, and rye grasses. Fertiligreens contains all of these ingredients plus many other fertility superfoods in an easy to use powder.

I am wondering if maca, bee pollen, vitex, royal jelly are ok to take if you want to see if you can improve egg health but are heading into menopause or or already in menopause (not had a period in a while)

    • Dear Cath,

Maca, Bee Pollen, Vitex and Royal Jelly would be fine to offer nutrients to the body and any remaining eggs in the ovaries.

They are not known to reverse the natural aging process and may not help a period return, though they support energy and libido still.

Can Maca be taken if one has kidney problems- protein in the urine and small kidney stones. Also, can Maca be taken if one has gall bladder stones?

Regarding the Maca and the Royal Jelly, are there any specific times in which they are best to take? Or are they safe to take all month long? Also do you recommend to continue the supplements once pregnant?

My periods are like clockwork though I have a challenge with good circulation and my period seems to come in heavy clots. Am working with a chinese herbalist and so taking Chinese herbs. Can I take maca and other superfoods you have mentioned or would they contra-indicate with any other herbs am taking.

    • Dear Gee,

While Maca and other superfoods may compliment the program you are on, because you are on a program as guided in following by another healthcare provider, it is best to consult that provider before adding to that program. We feel that if you are currently working with a healthcare practitioner and they have you on a program, it is best to follow that program for the suggested amount of time before you change it or start a different program. Health results take time to appear (1-3 months) and may take some patience.

A wonderful natural therapy to also ask your practitioner about is fertility massage. Consider learning more about Self Fertility Massage here…

      All my best to you!

I am trying really hard the next few months so my Husband and I can concieve a baby. We have always taken Basic Vitamins{ one a day} Now we have looked into taking FertilAid for Men and Women. I also have primrose oil. We also have been looking at other protein powders we can put in our smoothies we make every morrning, and on our ceral. I have looked in to maca, count boost, whey protein, and flax, and some other items. We really would like to know what we can take on a daily basis that won’t be a waist. Could you help us out with what is all good together. that will help us get pregnant.
    Thanks Andrea

    • Hi Andrea,

In general we feel that taking a good whole food multivitamin in preparation for pregnancy is best. This is because whole food multivitamins are 100% absorbed by the body. Other multivitamins are hard for the body to digest and sometimes our bodies to not break them down to utilize them. You can learn more about why wholefood multivitamins are best here:

In general I have a list of herbs, supplements and diet tips I feel are best for preparing for pregnancy for both men and women. Here they are-

FertiliCare Phase 1&2 for women- great overall herbal support, uterine tonic, hormone regulator
Red Raspberry Leaf- uterine tonic, very high in vitamins and minerals
      Natural Fertility Diet
Maca-nourishing for the entire hormonal control systems in the body, superior nutrition, as well as libido and stress support

Maca – nourishing for the entire hormonal control systems in the body, superior nutrition, as well as libido and stress support
      Male Fertility Diet

Overall, if you feel you do not get enough protein in your diet, FertiliWhey is a great way to boost the daily intake, it has 16 grams of protein per serving. Ground flax seed is an excellent way to get a lot of fiber, which is known to reduce excess estrogen in the body. If you feel your diet is poor, I definitely think the #1 thing you can do is add Fertility Superfoods, especially Fertilica Maca and FertiliGreens. The Fertility Diet alone is going to be a great way to increase reproductive and overall health.

      Best Wishes on your journey,

is it safe to take Spirulina when you are pregnant?

    • Hi Natalie,

Spirulina has been shown safe for pregnancy when it comes from a clean source. It is always best with any kind of supplement to let your doctor know you want to take this.

      Best Wishes,

  15. Hi Shona,

This is such a great question. And I plan to write about this in the near future. But to answer you, it takes some time. I get asked how long someone should take a supplement or herb before they stop and my answer for most supplements and herbs is “until you get pregnant”. It will take at least 3 months to get the bigger benefits of most herbs such as maca, vitex, dong quai, etc.

Also keep in mind that the cycle of an eggs health is at least 90 days, so what you eat and take today impacts the egg you will ovulate three months from now.
