Prepare for Conception with a Fertility Cleanse…

Prepare for Conception with a Fertility Cleanse…

Article Overview

I am sure you have heard about cleansing from one place or another; maybe it was about cleansing your colon or detoxifying your liver. While it may seem like a new fad, cleansing has been around for thousands of years, used by the Japanese, Egyptians, and Native Americans. Cleansing has been used as a natural way to keep the body healthy and may be one of the most beneficial things to do before you get pregnant.

Fertility Cleansing

The time while you are preparing for conception is one of the most important times to create a healthy body in preparation for pregnancy. It is also the best time to do a fertility cleanse. Fertility cleansing is a way to support the body in preparation for conception by cleansing the uterus and liver. A fertility cleanse encourages the liver to cleanse the body of toxins and excess hormones. It also supports the uterus to cleanse itself of old stagnant blood and increases circulation to the uterus while tonifying the uterine tissues.

Note: Do not cleanse during pregnancy or breastfeeding. You do not want to expose your baby to your body’s toxins as they circulate in your blood on the way out.

Why Fertility Cleanse?

Over the years the body can accumulate toxins from chemicals in the air, earth, and water and from substances we consume daily or slather on our skin. Many of these toxins get stored in the fatt; tissues of the body and can be released quicker through cleansing. Some of these toxins may be left from:

  • Hormonal birth control
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Pesticides
  • Excess hormones
  • Poor diet
  • Alcohol

Ideally, we would like our bodies to be as healthy as possible during pregnancy; through cleansing we are able to support the body in its natural ability to rid itself of these substances.

While cleansing is beneficial, not just any cleanse is going to be beneficial for fertility. A fertility cleanse is specific to the reproductive system and assists the body in eliminating the additional burden of substances not good for fertility.

A fertility cleanse focuses on three major areas that can help the body to prepare for conception: liver health, uterine health and increasing circulation to the uterus.

Liver Health

The liver helps to filter toxins from the body including excess hormones. If there is an overabundance of estrogen, it is the liver’s job to remove it from the system. Sometimes, due to poor diet, lifestyle or general health (chronic medication or alcohol are two examples), the liver may need some stimulation and support to get rid of these substances.

Linda Page, Ph.D., Traditional Naturopath, hypothesizes that every American “has some degree of liver malfunction” as a result of the standard American diet which is often high in empty calories, processed foods, fat, refined sugar, grains and alcohol. Other contributing factors to poor liver function are the unknown amounts of toxins from lifestyle choices, environmental toxins, and body care products. Other cultures may also be impacted similarly in this age of convenience.

By using whole herbs to support the liver you are helping your body to better cope with oxidative stress from our industrial world and the impact it could be having on your reproductive health. I will cover liver-supportive herbs in brief below, but to give you an example of the benefits of whole herbs, let me share about Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum):

  • Milk Thistle is known as the most beneficial liver herb. It’s benefits have been studied extensively, with mixed, yet promising findings. Animal studies in the German Journal of Medicinal Plant Research, Planta Med., found that Milk Thistle combats oxidative stress and increases glutathione content throughout the digestive tract, including the liver. Glutathione is a key antioxidant, “nature’s master antioxidant and detoxifier”, for the liver. Researchers at the Department of Gastroenterology, Cisanello Hospital, Pisa, Italy, report evidence from experimental research and clinical studies that glutathione holds promise for those needing to recover from oxidative stress-induced liver damage.

Uterine Health

Uterine health is very important for reproductive health. Every cycle, the uterus is supposed to release the lining that was built that month for the embryo to implant. In some cases the uterus is not completely cleansed every cycle, so old stagnant blood remains. As you can imagine, this is not the best environment to house a new embryo.

What causes the uterus to not fully release its contents every month? Some factors may be…

  • Low circulation
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Misplaced uterus

Through the use of specific cleansing and uterine herbs you can help support your uterine health, increase circulation and help tonify the uterine muscles, all helping to promote a healthy uterine environment. One example is Red Raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus):

  • Red Raspberry leaf is renowned for it’s ability to relieve uterine spasm and reduce prostagladin production, in turn easing contraction of smooth muscles like those in the uterus. The European Medicines Agency; Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC) acknowledges the traditional use of Red Raspberry leaf for “symptomatic receive of minor spasm associated with menstrual periods.” Combine Red Raspberry leaf with other herbs, Nettle (Utica urens) for example, for a nutrient-powerhouse herbal combination, tonifying to the uterus.

Increasing Circulation to the Uterus

In order for the uterus to function at its best, it requires proper circulation. With proper circulation, the communication loop between the uterus, ovaries, and the rest of the endocrine system is able to function smoothly. This is necessary for proper hormonal balance and all of the functions dependent on it such as ovulation, menstruation, and hormone production. Herbs may be beneficial in helping to increase the circulation to the uterus, as well as exercise and massage.

Cleansing for Fertility VS. Other Types of Cleansing

Fertility CleansingAre you wondering what the difference is between a cleanse specifically for fertility and a normal cleanse? There are many differences between the two. General body cleansing is wonderful and a great way to help support the body, but if you are preparing for conception, a fertility cleanse is more specific and focused on your needs. Below I have listed some of the differences between fertility cleansing and regular cleansing so you can see the benefits of cleansing specifically for fertility.

  • Works with the phases of the menstrual cycle
When doing a fertility cleanse, we focus on cleansing certain parts of the body during specific phases of the menstrual cycle. For instance, the liver phase of the fertility cleanse is done from the first day after your period has ended up until ovulation. We do this because this is a stimulating time of your cycle, perfect for encouraging the liver to work a little harder. The uterine phase of the fertility cleanse should be done from ovulation until the first day of your period. This is more of a nourishing and building stage of the cycle, when uterine herbs can help to support hormonal balance, increase uterine muscle tone and increase circulation right before the period begins.

With general cleanses, they do not focus on the most supportive times of your cycle or your fertility at all.

  • Whole Herbs
Cleanses come in many different forms; some are capsules and teas, some are fiber powders and drinks, while others are dramatic diet shifts. When it comes to fertility cleansing we want to do what is most effective and specific. We have found that using whole herbs in the form of teas, capsules, and liquid extract to be most holistic, effective, and gentle.

  • Gentle on the system yet effective
There is a wide spectrum of cleanses and they vary in length of time from one day to 90 days, sometimes entailing lots of trips to the bathroom and possibly time off from work. We have found that when preparing for conception, you do not want to do anything really dramatic or potentially harmful, so we focus on cleansing in a gentle yet effective way that is supportive of reproductive health. While doing a fertility cleanse you are able to continue going to work and function in your everyday life. We don’t require any dramatic dietary changes, but do suggest you begin to switch to a fertility diet.

There are no overly strong cleansing reactions while on the fertility cleanse except for some possible minor moodiness due to the liver cleansing itself. When toxins and hormones are being released, this can sometimes make one cranky, similar to PMS. This is good and can be helped by drinking more water.

  • Supportive of Fertility and Reproduction
Cleansing for fertility is very supportive and encouraging for fertility and the reproductive system. While there are many great cleanses out there, focusing on doing a cleanse specific for fertility is going to be the safest, most gentle, and most supportive while you are preparing for pregnancy.

Fertility Cleansing Herbs

Fertility cleansing is best done using whole herbs as they are the safest way to encourage cleansing in the body. Below are some of the herbs used in fertility cleansing.

Liver Cleansing Herbs

Burdock Root (Arctium lappa): Burdock root helps to stimulate digestion, as well as nourish and cleanse the liver, all of which aid hormonal balance.

Milk Thistle Seed (milk thistle or Silybum marianum): Milk Thistle Seed is one of the best plants for liver health. Liver health is vital for hormonal balance. The liver helps to filter toxins from the body, including excess hormones.

Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale): Dandelion leaves and roots are very nutritious and bitter, making this common weed a nourishing food and digestive aid. The root specifically supports liver health to help encourage hormonal balance.

Yellow Dock Root (Rumex crispus): This herb stimulates bile production for healthy removal of toxins, is supportive of liver health, and aids in iron absorption.

Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra):: Licorice is an adaptogen herb, supporting the endocrine system for overall hormonal support.

Ginger Rt. (Zingiber officinale): Ginger increases circulation in the body, helping to support a healthy inflammation response and normal detoxification.

Uterine Cleansing & Tonic Herbs

Goldenseal Root (Hydrastis canadensis): Goldenseal root supports a normal inflammation response which may help to prevent scar tissue and adhesion formation. It is also cleansing, antibiotic, and antimicrobial, helping the body to fight infection and occasional uterine discomfort.

Damiana Leaf (Turnera diffusa): A female aphrodisiac, Damiana has been used for centuries to help increase circulation to the reproductive system as well as increase libido.

Dong Quai Root (Angelica sinensis): Dong Quai increases circulation to the reproductive organs and is iron-rich, two important aspects of building a healthy uterine lining. It is also relaxing to the uterine muscles, helping the uterus to function without tension.

Peony Root (Paeonia lactiflora): Overall, this herb has excellent hormone balancing support. It also aids in pain reduction and relaxation. Peony encourages proper circulation in the pelvic area, making it useful for uterine stagnation.

Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus): Raspberry leaf works to tone the uterine muscles and normalize blood flow during menses. This is one of the best normalizing herbs for the female reproductive organs.

Fertility Cleanse Tips & Q&A

Can I take my other supplements while I am fertility cleansing?
While fertility cleansing, it is best to not take additional “new” herbs or supplements unless they are your multivitamin, omega 3, or fertility superfoods. Herbs or supplements that were started previous to doing a fertility cleanse can be continued.

How should I eat during my Fertility Cleanse?
During the Fertility Cleanse, it is not mandatory that you change your eating habits, BUT it is a great time to begin moving towards a fertility-friendly diet. One of the most popular ways our clients do the Fertility Cleanse is to combine it with our 21 Day Fertility Diet Challenge (you can find this explained in the eBook The 21 Day Fertility Diet Challenge at www.Natural Fertility This challenge has you add 5 foods to your existing daily diet, making it easy to add fertility friendly foods to your day.

Can we try to conceive the month I am doing the Fertility Cleanse?
We suggest that couples refrain from trying to conceive during the month of a Fertility Cleanse. There are two main reasons for this. The first is that there are herbs in the Fertility Cleanse that are not suggested during pregnancy. The second is, the Fertility Cleanse works best in preparation before conception. It must be completed in its entirety for the best results, we do not want you stopping the cleanse before it is complete. If you think you may be pregnant you should discontinue the cleanse.

Can I do the Fertility Cleanse while I am on birth control?

We do not suggest that the Fertility Cleanse be performed while on birth control or other hormonal medications. If you are currently using medications, check with your doctor before starting any herbal or nutritional supplement program.

Is it safe to do a Fertility Cleanse while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No, do not cleanse during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. The herbs in the Fertility Cleanse are not to be used while pregnant or breastfeeding.

How do I know that the Fertility Cleanse is working?
Many women wonder what ‘signs’ to look for to know that the Fertility Cleanse is working. For some they may ‘feel’ different, get their periods back, see a shift in their cycles, experience relief from occasional menstrual cramps, and many feel nothing at all. Just because someone may not ‘feel’ any different does not mean that the Fertility Cleanse did not work. The Fertility Cleanse will help every person who performs it. Some women are more sensitive than others and ‘feel’ a lot, while others will not ‘feel’ anything, but get great benefit. Remember, the Fertility Cleanse is supporting the body in its normal functions, it works for each person to help nourish and support the liver and uterus in preparation for conception.

Will the Fertility Cleanse help me get my period back?
There could be many reasons someone is not menstruating – diet, hormonal imbalance, stress, nutritional deficiencies, etc. Many of our clients who were experiencing slight hormonal imbalances have gotten their periods back from only doing the Fertility Cleanse, but this will not work for everyone because it depends on the cause of the lack of menstruation. So we see the Fertility Cleanse as the first step towards getting a period back, with additional steps to follow, such as diet changes, additional herbs to be taken monthly, stress reduction plans, etc. If you do get your period back due to the Fertility Cleanse, think of it as a bonus! But we do not depend on it alone, as the underlying imbalances/issues need to be addressed and the Fertility Cleanse is just the first step of many, but the best place to start.

Will the Fertility Cleanse be the only product I have to take to get pregnant?

No, most likely not. We have had some clients conceive directly after completing the Fertility Cleanse, but it is not designed as a fertility booster, rather as a fertility preparation tool to help the body prepare for conception. It is the foundational program most of our customers begin with. Those clients without fertility issues complete a Fertility Cleanse as a healthy and great way to prepare for conception.

How many times can I do the Fertility Cleanse a Year?
We suggest to complete a Fertility Cleanse twice a year.

I am 41, I am in phase 1 of the liver cleanse and have irregular periods. My period can be anywhere from 22-25 days in cycle. I believe I started the first day of ovulation tomorrow (12 days after the last day of my period) but it can be hard to tell. I had a spike in basal temperature today (up to 97.5 from 96.6) and egg white like discharge – which tells me ovulation is near. Moving from phase 1 to 2 is a bit of a guessing game – is this ok or is there something you suggest to stay on track?
    Thank you,

    • Dear Jennie,

Phase 1 of the Fertility Cleanse is best used fro 12 days, starting the day after menstruation ends. On the 13th day, Phase 2 can be started. While the Fertility Cleanse seems to follow the phases of the cycle, it actually does not. It is more important that each be used for 12 days.

I was wondering if you could teach us how to prepare the ingredients for the fertility cleansing. Do we eat it raw, cook it, roast it etc.?

  3. Avatar

Hi, I was wondering if fertility cleanse will result some minor cramps? I’ve been on the cleanse for about a week, phase I.

    • Dear Jenny,

The Fertilica Fertility Cleanse is not known to cause cramping. This said, each woman feels the results of cleansing differently. The herbs in the Fertility Cleanse stimulate the body to dump toxins and excess hormones into the bloodstream to be removed from the body via sweat, urine, feces, lymphatic system and more. Because these are temporarily re-circulating in the body, all of this may cause minor, temporary side effects.

Hello! I have been looking for resources to better understand my hormonal balance and encocrine system – came across your website. Here’s my question. I’m 25 and have practiced FAM for 2 years. I take a natural progesterone to aid with hormonal migraines during the last 14 days of my cycle. This past period was 2 days long and extremely light – no pain at all. Could this mean my hormones are out of balance? Low estrogen? Should I try this cleanse? I eat almost completely paleo and live a very active and wholistic lifestyle – no antibiotics or any medications.

    • Dear Anna,

Rather than indicating a hormonal imbalance, light, bright-red menstruation may be a sign of a lack of circulation to the uterus (called a ‘cold uterus’ in Traditional Chinese Medicine). This may be helped by regular moderate exercise and these herbs and natural therapies:
      Dong quai
      Self Fertility Massage
      Castor Oil packs

Consider learning more about each and if you feel you may benefit from a Fertility Cleanse, this could be considered before starting herbs or natural therapies.

It is a common belief that eating carbohydrates is unhealthy and I do in part see the draw to a paleo diet, but I also think its important to learn why eating the right carbohydrates are important for your fertility. Our guide Why Carbohydrates are Vital for a Balanced Fertility Diet will share more.

      Take care!

Thank you for the info Elizabeth! I currently exercise pretty regularly. Do you think even so it could meal lack of circulation?

Also, I rather enjoy the light, pain-free periods. Is it anything I should even be concerned about or enjoy it? 🙂

    • Hello again Anna!

How often is “pretty regularly” and what exercise do you do? Author Leah Campbell shares is her article Exercise and Infertility: The Goldilocks Conundrum, “Strenuous workout routines can lead to reduced progesterone production for women, making it nearly impossible for an embryo to implant correctly. Increased adrenal activity can also eventually interfere with ovulation and regular cycles.” So, be sure to not be overdoing exercise.

I understand enjoying a lite/pain-free period! 🙂 In general though a “healthy” period is views as 3-5 days with moderate flow.

I just did the fertility cleanse in June. I have an IVF cycle mid August and my doctor has recommended that I go on birth control before the cycle as I have an ovarian functional cyst 2.1cm x 1.5 cm. He is concerned that the cyst might release hormones into my system which might affect the IVF stims and he says birth control will take care of that. I really do not want to take birth control unless absolutely necessary and I’m wondering if I can either redo the fertility cleanse again next cycle, just before the IVF. Or is there anything else you would recommend that would help regulate my hormones to prepare for the IVF. I have regular periods (26 days). Thanks for your help.

    • Dear Lorena,

IVF is a completely controlled procedure, controlled with medication. There is not way around that really. It is truly best to follow your doctor’s advice. We don’t want anything interfering with the IVF process, anything natural or an untreated ovarian cyst releasing hormones (even if only a possibility of a chance it will).

Here however is our guide to Natural Ways to Support Your Body Through an IVF Cycle that you may find helpful!

      All my best!

I am a huge fan of your website and all the amazing wealth of information that you have assembled on this platform!
I am 33 y old female with no known fertility issues. We are going to begin TTC in few months (will be our first time) and I have been thinking actively about doing the fertility cleanse but I am scared that I may get some side effects. Are there any reported side effects of this cleanse? Do you recommend it to people with no known fertility issues? Also during the cleanse how do you know when to stop the cleanse if it is having some serious side effects? Thanks very much!

    • Dear Sasha,

      Thank you for your praise!

To be honest, if you have no known fertility health issues, your period is regular and healthy and you life a healthy lifestyle including eating a whole food diet that is largely organic, then I am not sure there is need for a Fertility Cleanse. That said, there are many very healthy women with regular cycles who still choose to cleanse before beginning to try to conceive. Each situation is so different.

The Fertility Cleanse is a mild cleanse in which we suggest eating a normal, whole food diet. Some do experience mild side effects of cleansing like feeling a bit sluggish, or increased need to urinate due to drinking more fluid (the cleanse includes two teas) that they are used to. We also have many women who cleanse and contact us asking if it’s working because they “feel” nothing at all while cleansing, and many who contact us sharing positive effects like increased energy, improved sleep, etc.

Each experience is so very different… I hope this is helpful as you decide whether to fertility cleanse!

please how many minutes (duration) should i carry out the abdominal fertility massage

    • Dear Ebele,

Self Fertility Massage is about 15-20 minutes with another 10 minutes or so of reflexology. Each Self Fertility Massage session will last approximately 30 minutes and it can be done 4-5 times a week from when menstruation ends until ovulation when actively trying to conceive.

This is a wonderful natural therapy! Enjoy!

    • Hello David!

The Fertility Cleanse is considered a foundational step in any natural fertility program especially for anyone who is experiencing fertility challenges. It helps to create a foundation for hormonal balance and a healthy uterus for implantation. It alone is not all that needs to be considered when working to naturally support the body in dealing with a fertility issue. It is a great first step!

A Fertility Cleanse Kit that contains the herbs discussed here is available from the Natural Fertility Shop.

Beyond cleansing, consider learning more about herbs, nutritional supplements and natural therapies to support the body in maintaining a healthy environment within the uterus by promoting hormonal balance and supporting the body’s natural ability to reduce occurrences of occasional growths. • Dear Jonel,

      Best wishes to you!

The Fertility Cleanse is best saved to use until about 4-6 weeks post procedure, or after your first normal period post procedure.

We know surgery can be so helpful in relief of symptoms. I hope this is the case for you. It is also important to support the body to avoid recurrence. Consider learning about the herbs, nutritional supplements and natural therapies known to support the body in maintaining a healthy environment within the uterus by promoting hormonal balance and support the body’s natural ability to reduce occurrences of occasional growths.

Can I combine Fertility Cleanse and Pregnancy Preparation Kits in one month? or should I take fertility cleanse first and then the pregnancy preparation kit? Thanks

    • Dear Nadia,

The Fertility Cleanse is a foundational step, first step, that we feel helps the body better respond to other natural therapies. It would be best to complete it first, and then begin the Pregnancy Preparation Kit. That said, Fertile Woman One Daily and Fertilica Cod Liver Oil (both in the Pregnancy Preparation Kit) can be taken while cleansing.

  12. Can I do the Fertility Cleanse if I have a Mirena IUD? I am 41 years old and trying to get pregnant for the 2nd time. I have a happy & healthy 11 year old. And I am a kidney transplant recipient – this October will be 18 years post transplant – Living related donor

    • Hi Margaret,

The Mirena IUD contains progesterone, and we do not recommend using any of the products in the Fertility Cleanse Kit with hormonal medications. Also, there are some herbs not recommended for kidney transplant recipients in the formulas.

      All the best!

I have been told that I have fibroids the size of a 6 month baby. I am 43 and married with one child. My husband and I have tried to have children but ended up losing 2 babies to miscarriage because of fibroids in 04 and in 05 after taking awful Lupron and miscarrying at 5 months. I have tried fibrovan and red clover with no changes. I am thinking of purchasing the fertility cleanse instead of undergoing recommended surgery. What would be your advice concerning the fertility cleanse?

    • Hi Lorri,

The Fertility Cleanse is a good option for any woman who is wanting to prepare for a healthy pregnancy, regardless of her fertility health history. The Fertility Cleanse is not a specific natural therapy for uterine fibroids, but is a good starting point.

To be honest, uterine fibroids that large can be detrimental to the health of the uterus, surrounding organs and tissues, and of coarse pregnancy. Uterine fibroids that size are considered more complex and typically don’t respond well to natural treatments. Surgery is one option, and there is another new medical option for removal that is less invasive, click here to learn about A New Uterine Fibroid Treatment Helps to Preserve Uterine Health

Natural treatments take many months, even up to a year or more to be effective, and regarding your age, I am not trying to be unsupportive in any way, but I really think you may be doing yourself a disservice to rely on natural therapies alone. If you truly want to get pregnant, a medical doctors options, at this point sound like your best options. Natural therapies specific for uterine fibroids may be used in conjunction with surgical or ultrasound techniques for removal, to help the body prevent the regrowth of uterine fibroids post-op.

I hope that you find this helpful!

Hello, I was wondering if this would be safe for me , I’m 14(almost 15) weigh around 94-96 lbs. and recently started having cycles . I have only had 2 but both have been painful and frustrating . Thx!

    • Hi Hannah,

Thank you for being brave enough to ask this question and being proactive about your health! Fertility Cleansing should only be performed by an adult female, so over the age of 18 and really it would be best to even wait until 20, when the menstrual cycle has had time to regulate. When a girl begins menstruating, it can take several menstrual cycles and sometimes up to a year for the body to get the hang of it, so it may be that your body needs more time. I am really happy you are interested in figuring out how to feel better now and have a healthy menstrual cycle. If you are truly interested in natural therapies for menstrual health, talk to your mom or another woman you are close to, who can help you figure out what natural remedies may be best. Years back a wrote a guide for teens – Herbs for Teen Reproductive Health: Steps for Healthy Choices that I think you will find helpful in navigating healthy menstrual cycle health.

One important thing to know about when desiring to use natural remedies… teens are going through a great hormonal transition, they are still growing and gaining weight, all of which play a huge role in the determination of natural remedy and the dose of that remedy. I’m 35 and have been trying for a baby since last summer. In Febuary I started getting a period every 2 weeks. I’m working with my gyno to figure out why but my question is, when would I start the first step if I continue to have this problem for a while? It says in this article that I would start after the last day of my period, right? Well, will it be a problem if I happen to start my period a week into starting this program? I’m confused 🙁 thanks!

    • Hi Shawna,

Great questions and it is good to hear you are working with your doctor to find out why your cycles are coming so close together. It may be best to find out what is going on before you begin a Fertility Cleanse. But, if you wanted to go ahead with it, you would just begin the day after your period ends and if your period begins again, you would stop taking all the products while you are on your period. You would then pick up where you left off and begin the product again when your period ends. If your period is not a full flow, but just spotting for most of those two weeks (not a full bleed), it would be fine to continue taking the Fertility Cleanse Kit products. You would only stop taking the products when you begin a full normal bleed. I hope that makes sense.

While I am still doing testing just incase, I actually figured out what was making my periods come every two weeks. Right before this issue started back in February I went to the doctor for leg pain and he gave me a steroid cortisone injection. It dawned on me last night and sure enough this has happened to many women. I’m excited to get my fertility cleanse though, should be in the mail soon 🙂

    • Good to know Shawna. Thanks for sharing.

How long after you do the fertility cleanse is it safe to start trying for a baby? I have heard elsewhere that if you are doing any sort of detox then you have to wait 3-6 months post-cleanse before trying to conceive again.

Do you take all the supplements and drink both teas every day? Or some once a week?

    • Dear Julia,

The Fertility Cleanse is a one month process (one menstrual cycle). Three products -one tea, one capsule and one liquid extract- are used during Phase 1 of the Fertility Cleanse and two products -one tea and one capsule- are used during Phase 2 of the Fertility Cleanse. The Fertility Cleanse Kit comes with a very wonderful, detailed instruction booklet to follow along with.

what effect does estrogen have on implantation or conception?

    • Dear Manchaya,

The quick version is that estrogen is necessary for ovulation, without ovulation conception can not happen. Estrogen (along with progesterone) is instrumental in thickening the uterine lining for implantation.

Learn in much more detail about the role of estrogen in fertility, the types of estrogens including xenoestrogens and how you can balance estrogen levels naturally through our Estrogen Fertility Guide.

I am 27 years old and have been diagnosed with premature ovarian failure (or early menopause). Can the cleanse help restart everything? I’ve been without periods for years and i am taking bio-identical hormones now but that does not cause the lining to fall away. My husband and I have tried for 5 years to get pregnant but with this new diagnosis we are looking into other options that may help. Thanks

    • Dear Brittney,

Fertility Cleansing is a foundational step in a natural fertility program. It helps create in the body a clean slate from which to begin naturally supporting the body and reproductive organs. It is often not the only way to offer support, but a first step.

I did the fertility cleanse 3 months ago after my ectopic pregnancy. I got pregnant again this month but it resulted in a miscarriage. I really enjoyed doing the cleanse since it helped in regulating my periods and clearing my fallopian tubes.Do you suggest doing a fertility cleanse again? or should I just wait it out?

I just started doing the second part of there fertility cleanse, which is the conception tea and woman’s best friend. It is hard for me to drink the tea because of the taste. Can anything be added to it like honey or lemon?

    • Dear Emma,

Yes, honey or fresh lemon juice can be added to Conceptions Tea. Conceptions Tea has a pungent, slightly bitter, floral taste due to the Damiana. Cherry juice or hibiscus petals can be added too, which might make it more palatable as well. It can be taken hot or cold. Cold is better for some people.

      I hope this helps!

I have not received my period in almost 5 months and my husband & I are trying for a baby. I am afraid my body must be filled with toxins due to not having my menstrual cycle monthly.
Would you recommend this cleanse prior to taking any fertility drugs?

    • Dear Nancy,

The Fertility Cleansing in general is a great way to create a foundation for hormonal balance for anyone who is experiencing fertility challenges. It creates a “clean slate” within the body, through gentle detoxification, to help the body to respond and utilize other natural remedies better. Consider reviewing our guide How To Get Your Period Back for additional tips about natural therapies to consider after cleansing.

Do weigh the pros and cons of fertility medications (drugs) because they are known to trick the body into action, rather than addressing the underlying cause of the issue, and can cause side effects.

Hi – I recently experienced my first miscarriage a little over a week ago 🙁 I ordered the fertility cleanse as a way to help my body heal before we try to conceive again (which we’re eager to do as soon as I’m feeling healthy again). I know the cleanse is recommended to start after your period, but I have irregular periods so I’m worried about how long it will take me to get my period again after miscarriage. Is it ok to start the cleanse once the bleeding from the miscarriage stops? What are the benefits of waiting until your period comes back?

    • Hello Carrie!

I am so sorry for your loss! Right now it truly is best to focus on rest, nourishing the body with whole foods and seeking emotional support when needed. There are also herbs for miscarriage recovery wellness. Fertility Cleansing is best started after your first period post miscarriage.

Allow time for the body to heal! All my best!

Hi! I have 2 fibroids and my menstrual cycle is not normal since then. If I do this fertility cleansing it would help to shrink the fibroids and to easily conceived? and how long should i do the cleansing. thanks.

    • Hello RosePT!

It is a first step. Fertility Cleansing is done for one month or one menstrual cycle and as often as twice a year (with about a 6 month break).

Consider also taking time to learn about the importance of herbs, nutritional supplements and natural therapies known to support the body in maintaining a healthy environment within the uterus by promoting hormonal balance and supporting the body’s natural ability to reduce occurrences of occasional growths.

I ordered Fertility Cleansing Kit and am already taking Himalaya Evecare plus Cassava root for twins. So, do you think I can combine all of them together?

    • Dear Chriss,

If the Himalaya product is herbal and you have been taking it, as well as the Cassava root, for at least 2 weeks or longer, then they can both be continued while doing the Fertility Cleanse.

I see that the fertility cleanse has many benefits, many women have spoke of getting their period to return. Can the cleansing affect of the fertility cleanse also take away your period?

    • Dear Angel,

The Fertility Cleanse is not known to cause a period to stop. This being said, detoxifying the body can cause delay in the timing of the menstrual cycle – meaning menstruation can come earlier or later, or the cycle may lengthen a bit, but we see these rare shifts as a result of detoxification regulate within the next cycle.

The herbs discussed here have been formulated into the products of the Fertility Cleanse Kit. There are three supplements in capsule form that are swallowed and two teas to be brewed and drunk daily while cleansing. Is everything gluten free? I have Celiac disease.

    • Hello!

The Fertility Cleanse Kit is gluten free. We have been contacted by some customers who have celiac disease and are worried that the maltodextrin contains gluten. Maltodextrin is gluten free. It can be made from a variety of starches, including corn, potato, rice or wheat. This being said, the source does not matter because maltodextrin is such a highly processed ingredient that the protein is removed, rendering it gluten free. I might add also that the source of maltodextrin in Fertility Cleanse products is a NON-GMO corn source and NON-GMO.

Could liver cleanse cause you to have an extra period? I have been taking milk thistle. I had an extra period type bleed mid-cycle where I released a lot of brown blood, clots and tissue for 7 days plus a few days later some spotting. I am now having my period again and the blood has returned to red and normal flow. Could this be a good sign of my body cleaning itself out?

    • Dear Margaret,

Some women, not all, spot or experience menstruation-like bleeding at different times than usual while they are taking liver cleansing supplements. This is a normal sign of the hormonal system ‘resetting’ itself.

I’ve been doing the cleanse and egg health kit for 11 days, and have been taking ovulation tests which should show that I’m ovulation. Do the supplements effect tests like this?

    • Dear Linda,

The Fertility Cleanse works to support detoxification and in doing so hormones can begin to fluctuate and balance. Several of the products of the OvaWise Kit also support hormone balance. In supporting hormone balance, the menstrual cycle can begin to show some pattern and regularity, including regular spontaneous ovulation. There is potential you may be ovulating.

My Ovulation has returned and last month I charted my cycle which was only 25 days.I noticed my BBT is 97.0-97.4 pre ovulation and 97.6-97.8 post ovulation. Also my luteal phase was only 9 days. Would I benefit from doing this cleanse? I plan on TTC starting in November. Before taking BC I had regular 28-30 day cycles.

Just found this site on Pinterest. I am 41, have only one working tube, history of PCOS, had a naturally conceived child 6 years ago, recently remarried and trying to get P with a husband with average sperm count/low volume. I was just cleared for P from my rheumatologist – it’s in remission and blood work free of bad medications (methotrexate). Anxious to hear your recommendations for my case…

I am 40 years old and have recently got married. I am really keen on conceiving a baby as soon as possible. But, I have had irregular period (less than 21 days) and longer menses for the last few months. I then went to see a doctor and has been diagnosed with endrometrium hyperplasia (EH). The doctor prescribed Clomid, but I have not taken it due to the irregularly long menstruation. Considering my current condition, would consuming Maca be helpful for me to recover from the EH? Would I need to first undergo fertility cleansing prior to taking Maca? What would be your best recommendation for me to properly deal with the EH? I look forward to hearing your response and would like to thank you.

    • Dear Sofia,

The goal of our programs is to support the body in re-learning balance and/or supporting balance when fertility issues are present. Herbs, supplements and natural therapies often work wonders in supporting the body given commitment to dietary and lifestyle change is made as well.

Endometrail hyperplasia is complex and there is a higher risk for cancer, so it would be best to seek the advice of a naturopathic doctor in your area. He/she may explain that with endometrial hyperplasia there is enlargement of the glands and cells of the endometrium due to low levels of porgesterone and high levels of estrogen

The Fertility Cleanse is a first step in any natural fertility program especially for anyone who is experiencing fertility challenges. It helps to create a foundation for hormonal balance and a healthy uterus.

While Maca is a nutrient dense fertility superfood that in part supports hormonal balance, consider also asking the practitioner you find and learning about remedies to help balance estrogen dominance and natural therapies that are helpful for uterine health like Fertility Massage and Castor Oil Packs.

      All my best!

Hi! I am 33 years old. My husband and I tried for over 6 years to get pregnant (over 2 naturally, then several rounds of IUI, and then two rounds of IVF). We finally conceived on round 2 of IVF and had our beautiful son 18 months ago. Now we are trying again but we’d like to try it naturally. The hormones and shots really did a number on me! What specific steps would you recommend? We have had the full gamut of testing and have only gotten the “unexplained fertility” diagnosis. We are willing to try whatever it takes with the hopes of doing this naturally. We’d really appreciate any feedback you could give us!

I am 40 years old and have been diagnosed with a uterine fibroid about as big as a three-month old fetus. I have also stopped menstruating, but not yet menopausal. I am overweight, so I may also have PCOS. I am desperate to have a baby. I have had a myomectomy done before. Will the Fertility Cleanse work for me?

    • Dear Chichi,

While the Fertility Cleanse is a starting point, a foundational step, to naturally supporting fertility health especially when fertility health issues are present, it alone may not be all that you need.

I have to be honest, the uterine health program we support may work better if the fibroid was removed. Consider working with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action for your needs and then consider the The Best Natural Remedies for Uterine Fibroids… to support the body in maintaining a healthy environment within the uterus by promoting hormonal balance and supporting the body’s natural ability to reduce occurrences of occasional growths.

      All my best to you!

At my last annual exam done in May, my doctor removed a small polyp and I was told that there was no cause to worry about it. The following month I had an HSG performed and was told that one of my fallopian tubes was blocked. Will the fertility cleanse be a good starting point to try to unblock it? What other products would be a good recommendation (I also recently purchased Wobenzym).

    • Dear Kesha,

While the Fertility Cleanse is a foundational step to naturally support liver and uterine health. It helps to create a foundation for hormonal balance and a healthy uterus for implantation. It alone will not unblock a fallopian tube. When working to naturally support the body in dealing with a fertility issue there is more to consider.

It is important to learn the location and/or severity of the blockage, in addition to what has led to, or is contributing to the blockage. Consider asking your healthcare provider to explain this and help you understand these factors.

I’m in menopause and just found that I have fibroids. Can this cleansing work for me?

    • Dear Yuriko,

While the Fertility Cleanse was designed for use of women who have not yet reached menopause, it may still be supportive of cleansing the liver and uterus, as well as supporting their health. It may be most helpful to find a natural healthcare provider near you to work with. Someone who can work with you to create the best natural uterine health program for your needs.

      Take care!
