Maca root (Lepidium meyenii) is one of our favorite nourishing fertility superfoods. It is what herbalists call an adaptogen herb – an herb that helps to support systems of the body. Maca specifically supports the endocrine system. The endocrine system is the body system that orchestrates hormonal balance.
We regularly receive emails asking really good questions about Maca. Because of one particular recent email about how Maca can support healthy menstrual cycle length, we bring you this video that was shared live. Download the Instagram App to watch our live broadcasts!
How Maca Works
Maca’s nutrient-dense profile allows it to have a nourishing action on the endocrine system, aiding the healthy function of the pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid glands. Maca contains a number of different vitamins, 31 different minerals and 60 different phytonutrients (some of which include carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, fiber, and also amino-acids). Maca is supportive of both women and men, without containing hormones itself, making it an herb to consider for those who wish to:
- increase energy, stamina, and mental clarity
- maintain normal sexual function
- support a healthy menstrual cycle and healthy uterine lining
- support follicle and egg health
- support sperm quality and motility
- facilitate a healthy stress response
- boost immune system health
Maca works to support hormonal balance within the body where it is needed. It will work for each individual who takes it slightly differently. The body will adjust and shift as it needs to do so, with each level of support it receives. It is important to know that the menstrual cycle may shift for a few cycles as the body relearns balance. Maca does not have a direct effect on any one reproductive organ or force the body to perform one specific action (menstruation, ovulation, etc.).
How to Use Maca
Maca is available in many forms – powder (plain and gelatinized), liquid extract (tincture) and capsules. I personally love to use the powder because I’m obsessed with smoothies and it’s my favorite way to use it. It is also available in varying strengths. When purchasing Maca you want to make sure the product you are choosing has only Maca root in it, not leaves or stem.
Suggested Use: General suggested use is 500-3000mg per day. Maca should be used on a daily basis for best results. Avoid taking the last daily dose after 1pm, due to its energy boosting qualities.
Safety & Side Effects: A small number of women have experienced stomach upset when consuming plain Maca root (not gelatinized). Additionally, some women experience spotting or a change in their menstrual cycle when they first begin using Maca.
Maca Use During Pregnancy: Since there have been no studies on the use of Maca during pregnancy we can not state that it is proven safe to use during pregnancy. Acute toxicity studies and cytotoxicity evaluations have demonstrated absence of any evidence of potential toxicity of Maca. Please do your own research and make a personal decision on the use of Maca during your pregnancy.
