Maca study reveals increase in sperm production and libido

Maca study reveals increase in sperm production and libido

Studies:

Researchers at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, in Lima, Peru, performed a 12-week double blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial in which active treatment with different doses of maca was compared with placebo. The 2015 study was published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Men aged 21-56 years received 3 g of maca. An improvement in sexual desire was observed with maca at 8 weeks of treatment. Serum testosterone and estradiol levels were not different in men treated with maca than in those treated with placebo.

Another study was designed to determine the benefit of a 4-month oral treatment with tablets of maca on seminal analysis in adult normal men aged 24-44 years old.

Nine men received tablets of maca (1500 or 3000 mg/day) for 4 months. Serum luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, prolactin, testosterone and estradiol levels were measured before and after treatment.

Treatment with maca resulted in increased seminal volume, sperm count per ejaculation, and sperm motility. Serum hormone levels were not altered.

Comments:

Maca has become a popular fertility herb and for good reason. Studies have shown repeat success in improving sperm health, increasing sperm count and promoting stronger motility. Maca also increases libido and sex drive.

What is maca?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root-like vegetable shaped like a turnip that grows at 12,000 feet and is only found in the high Andes of Peru and Ecuador. For more than two millennia, native Peruvians have used maca root as food and medicine, to promote endurance and improve energy, vitality, sexual virility, and fertility.

How does the Maca work?

It is not known exactly why maca does what it does, but that is the case for most herbs. Maca has the ability to effect key hormones and functions of reproduction without containing hormones. It has a type of wisdom as to what hormones need balancing and which to increase/decrease. Men who use maca have been shown to have an increase in libido and healthy sperm.

How do you use Maca?

Maca comes in powder, capsule, tincture or pills. You can use the powder in a fertility smoothie or with juice.

Dosage: Recommended dosage is 1000-3000 mg a day. To obtain desired results maca needs to be taken regularly. There are no side effects from taking maca; remember, it is a food.

I have a high FSH level, unable to concieve. Will this help?

    • Dear Theresa,

Maca is a nourishing food for the endocrine system, aiding both the pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid glands (all involved in hormonal balance.) Maca has the ability to affect key hormones in both women and men without containing hormones itself.

FSH, or follicle-stimulating hormone, is a naturally occurring hormone that is made by the pituitary gland in the body. If the FSH levels or either low or high, it is a clear indicator that something is out of balance within the reproductive system and may be causing issues with the couple being able to conceive. While FSH levels are used to determine if there is an imbalance, low or high FSH is not the direct cause of fertility issues, just a sign that their may be one.

Maca may help to support hormonal imbalance in general. If you would like to learn more about FSH Fertility and what high FSH means for your fertility please go to this link: http://natural-fertility-info.com/fsh-fertility.html

I am currently taking FertilAid capsules. Can I take Maca at the same time or should my husband be the one taking it?

    • Hi Mayra,

Studies show that Maca is safe for use by men and women. FertilAid is not our product and honestly I am not familiar with its ingredients, so I am sorry but I have no comment on it. You may want to ask the makers of FertilAid for advice on what is safe to take with it.

    Hi!
I wanted to confirm if Maca is designed for both men and women? Then, can we order from Mauritius Island in the Indian Ocean? I’ve been to a Fertility centre for blood test and the result says that I have PCOS(Moderate).I lost 12% of my weight and I got my menses back regularly the last 3 months after 3 years of irregular and mostly absence of monthly periods.I’m 32 and my man is 29 .
My husband has low spermcount and he is condemned to IVF… Do u think Maca can do miracles to him for in the past I fall pregnant(about 8-9 years ago).
The doctor claimed that the high intake of alcohol and the smoking of “cigarets” is responsible for the low spermcount and he also said that the situation is irreversible. What are your comments about this?

    • Hi Gwendolyn,

I am not going to say that Maca can do miracles for your husband, though it may help if he also quits drinking and smoking along with eating a nutrient dense diet and getting plenty of exercise. I don’t know the extent of damage the drinking and smoking has caused your husband’s body, but I never say never. If he chooses to work hard at removing those bad habits and chooses to work toward healing his overall health I think he can reverse his sperm health to the healthy side. If you and your husband would like to learn the best diet tips, supplements and herbs for increasing sperm health click here: Men’s Fertility

We do ship to Mauritius. Thanks so much! Have a wonderful day.

    Hi,
Thanks for the info on maca, i’m presently taking it with bee products supplements and spirulina. Pls, i’d like to know if all these supplements are safe to use in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
    Thanks.

    • Hi Esther,

Please consult your doctor if you would like to continue Royal Jelly and Maca into pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Some women choose to take these supplements during pregnancy, but there are some cautions so please get the ok from your doctor/midwife. Spirulina may be safe during pregnancy.

    Hi,

My husband has low sperm count & motility problems.

I have mittlesmertz ovulation, very painful. Will maca help or is there another product, I can take which will ease the pain?

    I’m from Canada.

    Thanks!

    • Hi Nana,

If you and your husband would like to learn what he can do to improve his overall fertility and sperm health click here: Men’s Fertility

For your ovulation pain- Self Fertility Massage, castor oil pack. Hip opening yoga. Is there scar tissue? Is the tube possibly twisted? Eating a less congesting diet – add juicing. Self Fertility massage may be very beneficial as severe ovulation pain can be a sign of a ‘cold’ uterus and ovaries.

im ann from philippines…i want to buy the ebook personal path to pregnacy by beth kelly..how can i have this book? Is that book available here in philippines? and also i have an irregular menstraution maybe due to my inverted uterus, please help me how to become pregnant if im going to marry.thanks maam…pls reply to my email add…

    • Hi im anne,

I don’t know where you can buy this book, maybe you could do a google search of her name and book, or maybe Amazon.com sells this book.

Please talk to your doctor about your options for conceiving with an inverted uterus.

“When the words inverted uterus is uttered there is usually a hushed questioning that lingers after the fact. However there is nothing wrong with having an inverted uterus as it is just a different version of how nature decided to create you. Generally speaking the uterus is located in a different position rather than being upside down as the word inverted suggests. The uterus may be positioned to one side of the kidney instead of being on top of it.

The only slight side effect to having an inverted uterus is the extra discomfort and shear pain of child birth. Other than this it has never been medically proven that the displacement of the uterus can harm the person in any way, it does not lead to disease or complications within the bodies’ functionality.

Often medically known as retroverted uterus it is more common that the uterus falls behind the bladder which may put pressure on there at some moments. It is about 1 in 5 women that have this abnormality so there is no call for alarm if the doctor informs you that you have the condition. The abnormality may be genetic or there can be a shift in positioning of the uterus during a difficult pregnancy.

Because of the limited side effects there is little option for correcting the displacement because there would be a greater chance of damaging something of an operation was done. If child birth does become an issue there is the option of caesarean section to make delivery safer and easier. An inverted uterus may cause extra problems in childbirth for teenage pregnancies though this is often the case with young pregnancies anyway.”*

Self Fertility Massage may help to reposition the uterus.

Can maca be taken while on ivf treatment or is it an herbal supplement?

    • Hi Green Hope,

Maca is a superfood, but it is also considered an herb. Because it has the ability to affect key hormones, yet does not contain hormones itself there is some questions to whether it may affect your fertility medications for IVF. If you would like to continue Maca through your IVF phase please talk to your doctor about it and get an approval from him/her.

    • Hi Sharon,

There are no gurantees you will become pregnant using Maca. No one can say for sure how long you will need to take it, every person’s body is different.

Optimum results are achieved after 3-6 months of taking Maca.

  18. the maca dosage, 2000mg-3000mg daily, is this the same for both men and women? I noticed on a previous question you answered: 09/03/09 “I usually suggest to start taking 1,000mg and working up to 2000 – 3000mg as needed over time. ” I have 525mg cap., will it hurt if I start with taking 5 daily? what about taking royal jelly, spirulina, fertili tea (vitex, red raspberry, ladies mantle, green tea, nettle leaf, peppermint leaf), false unicorn root with the maca? I started castor oil packs today. Almost forgot, my husband hates to take pills/capsules, what other ways do you suggest to take maca other than a smoothie. Can you mix it with any liquid? thank you so much for taking time out to answer my questions.
    Maryann

    • Dalene

      Hi Maryann,

It is always nice to let your body get used to an herb or new supplement before taking the maximum dosage. Easing into using this herb and seeing how your body reacts may be your best bet. More is not always better, nor is it going to make things happen faster. It can be stressful on your body to overload it with herbs all at once.

You can take Royal Jelly and Sprirulina with Maca. FertiliTea is not our product, I don’t give advice on this product, please ask the manufacturer of FertiliTea. You can mix Maca with juice, milk or oatmeal, hot cereal as well.

      All the Best,

      Dalene

dosage is 2000 – 3000 mg per day and on the bottle the recommended dosage is 1-2 capsule per day ( 1000mg) How much should I take daily? Along with it I am also taking
Women’s whole food daily multi and 2400 mg of spirulina, is this ok ?

    • Hi Ying, it may be best to start off at 1,000mg and then over time, as the body adjusts, working up to 2000 – 3000mg as needed over time. Maca is fine to take with Spirulina.

Can I find this at Walgreens, Walmart or another general store instead of having to order it off line?

    • Dalene

      Hi Angela,

Those stores do not carry maca that I know of. It is my experience with huge retail stores such as these, that quality is compromised. These companies are “big business” and sometimes their business practices are not the best. To keep their prices low they buy up huge amounts of low quality products often from countries with slave labor practices, not the best choice for you health. I recommend buying Maca from a source that has good business practices and cares about the health of not only you, but the entire environment. Most health food stores carry Maca, and of coarse we have a variety of organic maca options at our online shop.

      Warmly,

      Dalene

Hello, my husband has an infertility problem, he underwent surgery for vericocele repair approximately 2 years ago. His count was zero about 1 year ago and we have not tested his count since. His blood work came back normal but can maca help him recover and help with promoting a count in his case? We are going to see the fertility specailist this summer to see what our options are but if Maca can help him in any way, I wouldn’t mind buying it for him from our health food store called “Healthy Planet”, they sell Meca there. Please let me know if he can take this product to see if it would help him.

    • Dalene

      Hi Christina,

A Varicocele is a network of tangled blood vessels (varicose veins) in the scrotum. It is a leading cause of male infertility and may also cause pain and atrophy (shrinkage) of the testicles.*

I am not a medical doctor, but according to my understanding of Vericocele you will need to have your husband tested again to see what is causing the problem.

I don’t think Maca is the best option for this kind of infertility as Maca is related to hormonal balance. Estrogen in men produces erectile dysfunction, low/lack libido, low sperm count, and lowered production of seminal fluid. Men who use Maca have been shown to have an increase in libido and healthy sperm. Vericocele is not associated to hormonal balance to my knowledge.

Please consult with your doctor to find the best options for your husbands situation.

We do not recommend taking any herbs while on fertility medications. There is not enough research to show us if the medication and the herbs will negatively react to one another.
